Grand Suites Lake Tekapo

Highly recommend! This place is really well-designed and beautiful. The room was clean, and it's super close to the Church of the Good Shepherd, just a short walk over the bridge to the town center. They have a laundry room, and the gentleman at the front desk was so thoughtful; he kindly helped us with change and showed us how to use the machines. Much appreciated! The Chinese stargazing tour picked us up right where the last picture was taken. The weather wasn't great when we went, but honestly, we saw more stars in the little courtyard behind the hotel than we did at the actual stargazing spot. We lucked out and got a room when someone checked out. I was initially worried that booking late meant we'd have a bad view, and there was a slight obstruction, but it really didn't bother us at all. Loved it! I'd definitely choose to stay here again next time.

The room was very spacious and new, with a great location directly facing the lake. It had a kitchen and dining facilities, and although we didn't cook, it was fully equipped for anyone who wanted to. We checked in around 5 PM, and the owner was there to assist, even giving us a bottle of milk. Later arrivals check in independently, as there's no one at the front desk then. Hotels on the South Island typically don't provide amenities like slippers or toothbrushes. I knew toothbrushes weren't included, so it was good I brought my own slippers.

The room was very large and spacious, but the lake view was practically nonexistent, and it was quite a walk to get to the lake itself. However, the facilities were comprehensive, and they even provided complimentary milk upon check-in. The heated towel rail was a nice touch!

The room itself was great in all aspects! The owner goes home at night, so there's no one around. For dinner, you need to head into town early, as many restaurants won't seat you even if they have empty tables. And seriously, avoid the Chinese food! 😃
