I have been travelling for many years and I am very grateful to say that I have never had the sorts of experiences we had at this Beach Lodge. We arrived in Trinidad and were taken to the first place we had booked at. It was very far from everything, so we asked the taxi driver if he knew of a place that was closer to a beach and more accessible. He called the proprietor at Las Cuevas. As far as the premises go, the location is wonderful. This is its selling point. The Las Cuevas beach is right there; it is very well and well maintained with beach chairs to rent. There are food and craft vendors on the weekends and some food available on other days as well. When the taxi driver, Steven, called we heard the conversation where the proprietor Travis said that the rooms start at US$80 a night and they had room so “come”. When we got there, the US$80 rooms were not available, but they had rooms at US$107 a night. We decided to take this and checked in for 2 nights. Breakfast was included. When we went to check out, we were told that actually the rooms we used were US$141 a night!!! We insisted that this was not what we were told. Travis was not on site but was on the phone, insisting that he had told us this. He was shouting and insisting and even threatening to call the police! He even made up a story that our taxi driver who took us there would not let us take out our luggage because we did not pay him!!! Finally, after a long time of arguing we decided to just pay the money and get out. As we were waiting for our taxi, the police actually did come – four of them - complete with machine guns and everything!!! The place itself needs some organization. The laundry room, usually open, has the laundry piled up on top of one of the machines. When we went to get cover sheets for our beds, the staff person just went to the pile and rummaged through to find sheets. She gave us towels then too, one with a hole in it! (I took another from the pile)! We asked for a menu several times but were never handed one. Breakfast was mediocre at best – just one option. (I later came across the ’menu’ in the office and found that there were a lot of options but were just not offered)!!! We understood that the place came under new ‘management’ towards the end of last year. If they want to succeed, they will need to do something about their customer services and general attitudes. This was the worse experience I have ever had. I would definitely consider other options when I go back to Trinidad. There are, thankfully, other Air B&Bs and places to stay close to that beautiful beach!
