Letchworth Hall

Excellent classic old English hotel and dog friendly which was very handy for my Alsatian

We got married on 18 May at a nearby venue and decided to stay in the best room on our wedding night. The room is large and spacious with a super king bed which was very comfortable, but sadly that is the last good thing to say. The room was completely devoid of any extras, no toiletries apart from big bottles of hand soap, no shower gel, shampoo or conditioner, the barest minimum of tea & coffee (with no choices for herbal / alternative teas), four small cups of UHT milk, not a bottle of water in sight, let alone robes and/ or slippers which after a hectic day would have been nice. There were 3 TVs in the room, one in the bed area, one to watch from the sofa and one near the fridge ( completely empty!); we switched on the one nearest up the bed but when we decided to get ready for bed, only up find that the other two switched on! Lots of shenanigans, different that you would expect on a wedding night, as there was only one remote! Anyway the room cost £240 for the night and the lack of attention to detail should only gave been charged at least 40% less than that! We had family staying the bright at a hostelry nearby whose room was £150 and included Milton Brown toiletries, a beautiful room and a fantastic breakfast in the own room (another thing the LLH did not offer!) . All in all too expensive for what it’s worth, it’s a nice hotel riding on the reputation of what it once was, but you are paying top dollar for a lovely room but which failed in every other aspect for the price we paid. This is a lovely old house, with some lovely rooms, but it needs to be presented a little better. The room (which was an upgrade) I had was okay, but the curtains didn't quite fit, the TV had a mind of its own and there was no shower gel or shampoo in the room. We were first or nearly down for breakfast each morning - certainly the first who wanted toast as one of us would have to get on our hands and knees to get below the table to plug the toaster in. But the old communal rooms were nice, there was some nice history and the leisure club was very nice

Let’s start with the Positives; breakfast is good and actually the staff are really nice The Negatives, hold on you your hat, don’t use any rooms 72 - 78, the rooms heat up in the sun and the air con has broken. My room has a large map stain showing what I think is Antarctica by the bathroom. This was followed by strange black blobs in the bath of an unknown substance. The room was very hot, coupled with the broken air-con and the windows restricted open made the experience…. Well you get the picture. Tired and shabby is a fair description.

This hotel has character yes but is so dated and run down. I've stayed at IHG hotels around the world and never experienced a hotel as bad as this. The radiator in my room won't turn off! My room is baking hot. I contacted reception who came up, turned the thermostat (which is clearly broken) to no avail. I was told maintenance would come and look at it while I was at dinner. Checked at reception on my way back up 3 hours later - sorry they've not replied. Oh and we have no other rooms so you have to stay there. There is nothing they can do. I've never known anything so ridiculous. My room is baking, I'm sleeping with my window open and a blazing radiator. Ooh and then there is the toilet. Whomever fitted the toilet seat needs glasses. It's the most uncomfortable toilet to sit on. This hotel is a disgrace for IHG.

This was probably great once....very friendly staff in a good setting with excellent leisure facilities right next door at Nuffield Health. However it is very tired and in desperate need of refurbishment. My beds mattress doesn't even fit the base and you can feel every spring through it as it is only 4 inches thick, the most uncomfortable bed I've tried to sleep on. The carpet, curtains and bed base have unpleasant stains on them and the paintwork is chipped. Asked for a better room they're fully booked, asked for a mattress topper or new mattress but unable to oblige with that too and I'm meant to be staying the week. Will probably check out early and endure the drive daily than stay for the duration as it's impossible to get comfy nights sleep. Wi-Fi is incredibly weak and keeps disconnecting.

The building was freezing cold. The bathroom in our room was freezing cold. Cobwebs all over the ceiling. Tv remote did not work. Asked for a replacement but was ignored. Asked for a glass of water at the bar for my wife and was charged £3!!!

Comfy bed, clean enough. Woke up to no electric in my room at all. Couldn’t phone reception as the telephones are powered. Got dressed by torch and could not use any of my room facilities, told reception who already knew about a power fault and there was not a hint of a refund or gesture of good will. Unfortunately I was there on business and didn’t have the time to argue as I was already late from the pitch black fun and games.
