The dingy moth eaten curtains, unwashed windows and communist era entrance way welcomed me. Greeted by the pleasant receptionist, my hopes were immediately dashed when I was told “no dinner, no bar, no breakfast”. I was given my key to Room24 and a wifi code. The walk up to the second floor was broken with the usual artwork showing exotic locations and vistas, somewhat let down by the surrounding stained carpets, walls and unknown smell. I entered Room24… A single room, complete with skip-ready furniture, smelling of fresh paint but with stained and claw marked walls and a small window set at scrotum level overlooking a scene from Chernobyl. Upon sitting on the sinking stained bed, the scent of fresh paint mingled with that of stale urine. The toilet had no hot water, but otherwise seemed alright for now, with some of the cleanest cobwebs I’ve seen - I can only guess that the flies didn’t want to stay long either. Settling down to watch some tv, the lack of remote control made me reach for the Wi-Fi code I was provided, only to find no Wi-Fi was available. Still, I had the ceiling stains to look at. My plan for a cup of tea was immediately dismissed upon inspecting the spore filled kettle, used spoon and chipped and stained mug. Night came and with it, strange guests roaming the corridors and a lack of heating - my tee, hoodie and socks allowed me pleasant 15min intervals of sleep until I woke up cold. The wind outside, blowing through the gaps in the bathroom window and thus disturbing the shower curtain, provided moments of light and noise as the motion sensor lights and fan was activated. Finally, my release came as my alarm went off - I was free. The shower provided some lukewarm comfort to my skin from scratching all night long - the exposed mattress clearly capable of hosting numerous microorganisms. One to recommend for those you hate.
