Super 8 by Wyndham Luverne I90
2.8/559 Reviews
Over the years, Super 8 has really stepped it up, offering affordable stays in modern, attractive, clean hotels with a free breakfast. If you’re a frequent Super 8 guest, keep driving through Luverne, Minnesota. We arrived around 10:30pm. The Super 8 looked like it was undergoing some construction from the outside of the building, there were building supplies and orange safety cones haphazardly placed around and near the main entrance. We entered our first room to find that only the bathroom light worked. After figuring out that the lamps were just not plugged in, our dimly lit room revealed that there was no smoke detector, instead just a few wires sticking out of the wall. There was also this strange piece of metal (approximately 4 inches) sticking out between the two double beds. Later, we were told that it was just part of the bed frame because the bed wasn’t sitting right on the frame. We requested a different room or that those two concerns be fixed. Our second room had a strong wet carpet/mold and mildew smell, it was horrible. It did however have a smoke detector. We went back to the front desk and asked if we could perhaps see a room that she had actually seen or smelled. The third room we were shown was on the second floor and smelled worse than the room before. After hearing that they could not guarantee that all of the rooms on the first floor had smoke detectors, we finally settled for the lesser of three evils and stayed in the second room. We discovered the smell was likely from water damage at some point and improper restoration. The air blowing out of the rickety air conditioning unit wasn’t helping either. I’m not sure who installed the air conditioning unit but I’m certain that my 6 year old could do a better job. After removing our shoes, we confirmed that there had definitely been some type of water damage because the carpet had a strange, wet, squishy, slushy feet underneath our bare feet. We ended up sleeping with the window open and a couple of battery operated fans to circulate the air. Breakfast was ok, not as nice as the Super 8’s we’ve been to in the past. In the light of day as we were packing up the car, the imperfections and safety concerns in and around the facility were glaringly obvious. At this point, it was just best that we hit the road. I wasn’t expecting a five star hotel with plush bathrobes, just a clean, minimalist type room with a hot breakfast.
