We're old hands at another pub in the Uphams/Charming Bedrooms chain so we thought we'd give this one a go. We spent two nights here (Mon-Wed) in March. We stayed in the separate Miller's House (about thirty yards up a slope from the main hotel, a seventies-ish building) in a Comfy Double. The room was certainly that, especially the big bed; it was very warm, to the point that we turned the heating off. Good shower too. Only downside were the rather poor windows which were old and need replacing. The grounds are really interesting, areas grouped around the mill streams and formerly used for weddings, apparently. Curious sculptures abound, from buxom females to Star Wars. It must be lovely in fine weather - wet when we were there. Unfortunately the road outside the hotel is quite narrow and busy and has no pavements, so it isn't easy to walk out from. The bar and restaurant areas are really nicely done out. We dined there both evenings and sat next to an open fire set inside an old millstone. The food isn't cheap but was very tasty. They have local gins and the cask beer has come a mile from the Monkey Brewhouse (also worth a visit!). Breakfast was quite extensive, lots of choice and flexibility, and nicely presented. We found the staff excellent, and a special mention is necessary for Libby, who checked us in, took us to our room, served our drinks, gave us loads of info about the hotel and the area, and did everything cheerfully and enthusiastically. Value her!!
