Room was filthy, and smelt of damp/musky - receptionist took me to one of the “better rooms” to see if that was any good - it was only slightly better and still had not had a proper clean. Management did refund in full - I was checked in and left within 20 minutes, now in a travel lodge for half the price - you know what you are getting here, avoid if you can!

The food and staff were good, but the room was cold and the hotel good do with some TLC in places. It was close to where I wanted to be but I think it's expensive for what it is.

Fortunately we noticed in our welcome email that the promise of spa access at the time of booking was actually restricted to after 5PM despite the original booking having no mention of this limitation. This gave us time to cancel after finding out that we would be charged £35 each per day to use the facilities at other times of the day. They need to make this clear at the time of booking so I am posting this review to warn others.

The Frederick’s hotel is a weird mix of a beautiful interior, tired furnishings and questionable service decisions. Unfortunately, we left our recent 2 night stay, disappointed with the amenities and service provided. The room, whilst spacious and comfortable, is quite tired, with older “period” furniture. The TV is older than expected, and bathroom furnishings again feel past their best. However, the hotel maintains moderately high cleaning standards that are good to see. Generally, on our visit, amenities were lacking, a missing bathmat, towels and the biggest disappointment, a cold, and partially functional spa. We can’t help but feel cheated, that the spas lack of availability isn’t as clearly advertised. On our visit, the pool was not heated as normal. We were provided with no information or apology as to why this was the case. Various showers and steam room were also out of order during our stay. Where ‘Frederick’s’ falls down further, however, is its service. We opted to use the hotel restaurant in the evening, and despite visiting at 19:40, we found no one around! The restaurant was totally empty, and it took 10 minutes if wandering around to finally be served. We couldn’t help but feel rushed through the restaurant, pressured to order, eat and leave. Every few minutes, we were visibly checked, hovering awkwardly to swoop plates away. The minute they were, the music stopped and the lights came on. A less that subtle cue for us to leave. Breakfast also wavered in quality. On our first day, we received a continental breakfast buffet and table service hot food. On our second day, we were served a hot buffet, considerably lacking in choice, specifically no vegetarian or vegan options. Again, no reasoning as to why this was the case. This is the disappointment of the Frederick’s, poor service in a tired hotel. It’s such a shame, as there are real glimmers of pure 4 star luxury here, it just feels as though it is slipping below expected standards. It feels as though major investment throughout its rooms, spa and service quality needs to be made to justify the price of this once luxury hotel.

We booked this as my other half wanted to watch local football. The compromise was a slightly more expensive hotel due to it having spa facilities, was looking forward to a wonderful relaxing night away. This unfortunately wasn’t what I got, I firstly started with ordering some food, ordered fish and chips at 2:30 pm, was told the chef was “out” and would be back at 3pm, food then arrived at 4:45… lots of time sat waiting and absolutely no apology, still had to pay the £5 “tray delivery” charge after waiting this long for some simple fish and chips. I then went to explore the spa, an absolute ghost town on a Friday night of a bank holiday weekend (I get why). When booking we were not told but apparently the pool was broken, it looked like a pond and was absolutely freezing, the inside area which was the only bit available was about the size of a king sized bed. The tiles were all off and every time you tried to swim, the noise of the screens to the outside creeked VERY loudly- hardly relaxing if you ask me. When I went to ask about the pool and what else could be on offer, I shouted and had no response. I walked round to find the very unhelpful staff member with headphones in watching Netflix on her phone. She was shocked that I had distracted her. Won’t be coming back in a hurry :(

My recent stay left much to be desired. The receptionist, regrettably, was not overly helpful or friendly, setting a disappointing tone for the rest of my stay. Once in my room, I discovered a litany of issues. Holes in the window netting, a broken curtain rail, and excessive noise pollution from the nearby road. The broken TV remote control added to the frustration. Cleanliness was my major concern. Dirty water glasses, dust-covered surfaces and skirting, and even a used toothpick painted a grim picture of the room's upkeep. The state of the toilet was particularly appalling, with evidence of prior guests' neglect evident around the lid and stray hairs. Toiletries left behind from previous occupants, the shower had only one temperature which was scolding and to top things off, an annoying intermittent beeping sound in the hallway disrupted any chance of a restful night's sleep. Given the state of the room, I opted to forego dining at the restaurant. The hotel's dated decor was of little consequence compared to the fundamental issues of cleanliness and maintenance. In the end, I was looking forward to checking out and returning to the cleanliness and comfort of my own home. I sincerely hope that my feedback serves as a catalyst for improvement. Until then, I cannot in good conscience recommend this hotel to fellow travellers seeking a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
