The Frederick’s hotel is a weird mix of a beautiful interior, tired furnishings and questionable service decisions. Unfortunately, we left our recent 2 night stay, disappointed with the amenities and service provided. The room, whilst spacious and comfortable, is quite tired, with older “period” furniture. The TV is older than expected, and bathroom furnishings again feel past their best. However, the hotel maintains moderately high cleaning standards that are good to see. Generally, on our visit, amenities were lacking, a missing bathmat, towels and the biggest disappointment, a cold, and partially functional spa. We can’t help but feel cheated, that the spas lack of availability isn’t as clearly advertised. On our visit, the pool was not heated as normal. We were provided with no information or apology as to why this was the case. Various showers and steam room were also out of order during our stay. Where ‘Frederick’s’ falls down further, however, is its service. We opted to use the hotel restaurant in the evening, and despite visiting at 19:40, we found no one around! The restaurant was totally empty, and it took 10 minutes if wandering around to finally be served. We couldn’t help but feel rushed through the restaurant, pressured to order, eat and leave. Every few minutes, we were visibly checked, hovering awkwardly to swoop plates away. The minute they were, the music stopped and the lights came on. A less that subtle cue for us to leave. Breakfast also wavered in quality. On our first day, we received a continental breakfast buffet and table service hot food. On our second day, we were served a hot buffet, considerably lacking in choice, specifically no vegetarian or vegan options. Again, no reasoning as to why this was the case. This is the disappointment of the Frederick’s, poor service in a tired hotel. It’s such a shame, as there are real glimmers of pure 4 star luxury here, it just feels as though it is slipping below expected standards. It feels as though major investment throughout its rooms, spa and service quality needs to be made to justify the price of this once luxury hotel.
