This multi-level cave hotel is located into the hillside of the Sasso Caveoso District of Matera. We had stayed in a similar setting in Cappadocia, Turkey and were excited to make a comparison. Located near the Church of San Martino and abutting the city center. Due to its being multi-level, it has a series of balconies that proivde a view of the Barisano. Care was taken to preserve the original homes from which this hotel has been assembled. An unexpected and wild feature is the addition of a thermal bath within the confines of this establishment that is open to all as you do not have to have booked a room to partake of the facilities. i might add that the complementary breakfast is unusual and varied. We happened to be at the hotel with a group visiting from Korea who were allowed to use kitchen facilities to prepare noodle and kimchi dishes that they willingly offered to share with us. What an unexpected treat. The "Thermae" (spa complex), although at an extra cost, is definitely worth a visit. The three sections of the swimming pool are in a cave that stretches ever deeper into the hillside. With colored lights dedicated to the temperature of each location, one went from green (cold pool), to blue (rest area), orange (hot tub) and red (steam room). The mosaics on the floors and walls definitely resembled those in a Roman bath and were artfully done, The staff was very helpful and master masseuses. This hotel - bathhouse is definitely on my revisit list.
