I stayed here without meals. The room was spacious and comfortable, but there was a misunderstanding regarding the reservation terms upon check-in, which was disappointing.

The owner and his wife are very kind. Although it is a bit far away from Songdo coast attractions and it is difficult to walk in the snow in winter, it is very quiet. There were only two of us on the night of check-in, so we were allowed to bathe together🤣. The owner even sent us to the station the next day ~ a beautiful traditional hotel

We thoroughly enjoyed our nights at Matsushima Koumura. It was a relaxed environment with traditional elements that we viewed as highlights to our stay. Our hosts were extremely kind, happy and friendly - we found them very joyful to be around. We are very thankful to our hosts for our stay, delicious bread/salad breakfast, and kind offer to taxi us to train station.

Hosts were some of the kindest people I’ve met traveling. Extremely helpful and treated us like family. Will definitely stay here again

Despite an apparent plethora of places to stay, finding somewhere was difficult in Matsushima – however, Koumura Matsushima came to the head of the list of places prepared to accept independent travellers. Offering Japanese style accommodation, this was a pleasant night with charming hosts. With Japanese style rooms, it is a great way to experience more traditional accommodation with futons on tatami mat floors, a traditional ofuro for bathing (in-room baths are available too) and breakfast in the morning. The hosts couldn’t have been more helpful and charming and even took us to the station the next morning. The one slight down side is that it is a bit of a walk from the main attractions along a very busy road that seems to blight the whole town. But worth the stay and we’d go back.

Our group of 8 had a wonderful time staying at this ryokan. The couple were so welcoming and helpful. We were able to bring our food and drinks and sit together after a full day touring Matsushima. We felt so at home enjoying the company. They have two little poodles that were adorable! Matsushima was our favorite place in our independent touring Tohoku region. The breakfasts was most delicious!

The hotel is a kind of 2/3 star Ryokan, the owners are very kind, especially the lady running the hotel, she found somebody to take my luggage upstairs and back down when I was leaving. In fact the elevator is not in use.... BFast was not included in my plan, so I paid extra ,just a few hundred yens , I tried the japanese and the western BFast, both were average . The Ryokan is not new , but rooms are very spacious and they ressemblent more to a japanese flat, comparing with the surface of other hotels' rooms I had in Japan. The room was spotless .. There is also a hot bath at 3rd floor, where I went 2 times, smal but pleasant, I was the only user, at those times. I also had dinner at the hotel, in a nice Japanese style dining room ( where I had BF too ...), the menu is Korean , and had for the first time fried oysters from Matsushima bay.... The room was very quiet at night and I liked this japanese style type of rooms, I think I' d go there again , they also have a good quality/ price rate ...

Although this is an older ryokan, Matsushima Koumura has been kept well by the lovely couple who run it. If you want a taste of the real Japan, and help local businesses thrive then go to this no frills family run ryokan. It is small with only 8 rooms, so not busy at all and allowed a personalized experience. The owners were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The owner even personally drove us to the train station to ensure we would be able to catch our connecting local train to the Shinkansen in Sendai. Our room had a private bath but we chose to try the traditional "sento" located on the 3rd floor. It is not a natural mineral hot spring "onsen" but a regular public bath just for those staying in the inn. The water was nice and hot. Relaxing to soak in after a day of travel and touring. We had the best, most delicious Japanese breakfast here too for a very affordable price. The small town of Matsushima is a beautiful place worth visiting and this inn was within walking distance to the red bridge to Fukuurajima and into town. We enjoyed a nice getaway for a couple of days away from the busy city. I recommend staying here if you want to be treated like family or friends coming home for a special visit. Not for those looking for luxury pampering, nor a high end fancy spa with additional services. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves here and would love to return again!
