We stayed at Glenthorne for two nights recently we had a double room with an ensuite which was beautifully decorated, it was spotlessly clean and although we didn't meet the hosts due to covid Claire was available via text to give recommendations. Genthorne is a very quiet house we hardly heard a noise during out stay. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom had high quality toiltries and there was complimentary welsh cakes, milk and water in the room which was a really nice welcoming touch. We stayed here to hike up Pen Y Fan and it was an ideal location in terms of distance its around a 20 minute drive and although we made the most of our stay I wouldn't be in a rush to return to this area of Wales. The Reasons I have given the review very good instead of excellent are as follows When booking the room I was made aware that there was no parking but it stated that the parking on the road was unrestricted however we did find that the cul de sac was too busy to park in and the next road had quiet a bit of double yellows and dipped curves which made it difficult. We did struggle to park nearby but eventually found parking on the road but given the area and the busy road it wasn't ideal. The town itself is very run down as we drove through the centre to look for a nice place to have a couple of drinks or some food we where shocked at the atmosphere in the town there was bouncers on all the pub doors and lots of drunk people falling in and out of pubs. Coming from Birmingham it takes a lot for me to consider somewhere unsafe or even unpleasant but we actually stayed in both nights because the local pubs looked so rough. I would say if you are looking for a nice base to stay and stay in on an evening and chill out in your room this place is ideal but if you are hoping to go to a nice area, with nice cafes, restraunts pubs etc I wouldn't recommend. The location really put a dampener on our weekend away and I wish I had realised how run down the local area was before learning the hard was and having a disappointing weekend compared to what I had in mind.

Claire is a fab host and the studios are lovely, spotless, quiet and perfect for a short stay You get lots of little extras including milk, tea , coffee, shower gel, shampoo etc and the guest WiFi is very strong. You may even get a delicious little local treat too. The studios are about a 15 minute walk from town which is not a problem however I would get a taxi back as it's a fairly steep walk back especially in heels. There is a small mini market about ,5 mins walk away if you forget a shop and ,wish to use the studio small but functional kitchen. There is also a huge Tesco in Merthyr next to railway station. The shower is a rainfall shower and is hot and powerful wether you use it in the morning or evening I would absolutely stay again, it's a fantastic place to stay with loads of nice touches from Claire to make your stay even better. It's very peaceful inside Glenthorne and in the local streets.

What a wonderful place. We booked a 1 night stay but wish we had booked longer. Everything was spotlessly clean, furniture and fittings were of high spec. The little details made so much difference they really have thought of everything. Milk, tea bags and coffee, washing up liquid, washing pods, hairdryer, you name it, the studio has it. The bed was really comfortable, it was so homely. The only minor issue we had was parking. But we will definitely be returning.

1. Even though I had booked almost 3 months in advance my booked studio apartment was rented to another person. Clearly they had come last minute and offered more so I was bumped down to a smaller room which was nothing like what I’d booked. 2. The host tried to pass it off as my fault (she said that was the room I booked) until I showed her photo evidence upon which she gave an insincere apology. 3. The option she presented me was to move rooms every night or move to another apartment which she was to arrange. After I agreed to move to the new place she proceeded to inflate the price ( after we had agreed and without speaking to me first) and threaten to kick me out after one night if I didn't pay that. 4. The said new apartment was horrible in every sense! It was clearly being renovated!. There were horns and cattle heads as decoration in the room( absolutely not what I signed up for! 5. I had to lug myself and my luggage(again!) back to Glenthorne and agreed to take the room without self catering facilities and also agreed to move every night for the rest of my stay. 6. The next day Clare did eventually kicked me out with an hour notice because I wouldn't leave the room at 10am for the room to be cleaned. She was going to move my stuff to the new room WITHOUT me and just wanted me out SOMEWHERE. ANYWHERE. She had absolutely no respect for the need to rest despite my stressful previous day which was her fault. 7. She said she will give a full refund but didn’t do that. This lady is extremely dishonest and would lie back and forth about even little things to cover her mistakes! Because I see on the reviews everyone else has enjoyed their stay and the warmth of the host( she’s got the most glowing reviews!) my only conclusion is that the only reason I could possibly have been treated as horribly and disrespectfully as Clare did (DESPITE HER MISTAKE )was that I didn't have a British/Welsh accent or surname. We have just returned home after a fantastic stay in one of the studios at Glenthorne. Claire the host was very accommodating and helpful from the moment we booked our stay. The studio that we stayed in was spotless and catered to all our needs. The fresh Welsh Cakes that were left for us was a really nice touch. We also opted for the Continental Breakfast, which consisted of 2 lovely fresh croissants each, with fresh butter and a choice of jams, lots of fresh fruit, greek yogurts, fresh orange juice and a lovely muesli. Which really set us up for the day ahead. We really couldn’t fault a thing and will definitely be returning in the future...

Couldn't have picked a better place to stay in Merthyr. We didn't manage to park on the Grove as suggested, i'm assuming as it was a busy saturday, but we still managed to park pretty close. We stayed to do some walking in the Beacons and it was so nice to come back to. Lovely and clean, the rooms are well done and genuinely do have everything you need (shower gel, tea & coffee, a garment steamer and my personal fave, fresh milk), there was even an emergency sewing kit in the vanity drawers! Loads of food nearby if you dont want to head out. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again/suggest anyone else stay here!
