The Hozantei ryokan is a collection of traditional Japanese rooms, situated around a small koi carp pond and garden area. Rooms are Japanese style, some having their own outdoor hot spring bath overlooking the nearby river. The location is lovely, the rooms are perhaps a little dated but the service from all staff was excellent throughout our stay. Food in the restaurant, both for breakfast and dinner was plentiful and excellent.

I checked the eating log and decided on the inn that seemed to have the highest customer evaluation in Kurokawa Onsen. Other metrics, such as TripAdvisor, were deliberately ignored this time. Like Yufuin, Kurokawa Onsen has many popular inns, making it difficult to choose. Mr. Nakai and his colleagues are all Koreans (and other foreigners?), and they seem to be cutting costs in terms of management, but it wasn't unpleasant. It is very nice that each room has about two baths. The room is a cheap construction that should be called a Japanese-style bungalow. Dinner was disappointing, not as good as word of mouth, but the portions are generous. I didn't check, but maybe the chef has changed. The lodging was good for the price, but from a food point of view there are probably better lodgings in Kurokawa (such as Yamamizuki). At least, the eating log doesn't seem to be useful for choosing an inn in Kurokawa. How to use Tabelog is difficult. Hozantei was excluded from the “Kyushu Onsen Ryokan Ranking 100” in “Mapple Onsen Yado Kyushu” 2021, unlike in the past.
