Awkward is the word I would use to describe our recent stay, I understand this isn’t a hotel, and hotel service should not be expected. However, given the price differential between staying at a traditional stay such as Yakouin, and staying in a similar, self-served AirBnB, I don’t think the price is justified. Better explanations about the service, including having a welcome sheet in English would be a great start, as this place is listed on international travel sites, it’s important to make international travellers feel welcome in the stay. Was also disappointed to see Foreign guests had to pay a deposit for the room, but noticed Japanese guests didn’t have to pay a deposit.

Our family with three generations very much enjoyed the food, bath, and hospitality at Yakuoin. We have very little Japanese, but felt welcome and had an English speaking guide for the morning service and tour at Zenkoji Temple.

This place is ~5mins walk from Zenkoji temple. neighborhood is peaceful at night.
Shoes to be removed outside the accommodation. Rooms are on the 2nd floor so you'll have to carry your luggage up (there's no lift).
Room (with window) is huge. You'll have to head downstairs to use the shared toilet and shared onsen (no toilet inside the room).
We were only allowed 30mins of onsen time for 2 pax - couples weren't allowed to use the onsen concurrently so we had to go one after another (i'm not sure if the instructions got lost in translation..). Felt very rushed so i didnt really get to enjoy the onsen experience, but overall was nice and clean.
Interesting 6.30am tour around the area and within the temple itself, followed by a simple vegetarian breakfast (porridge with omakase-styled sides with miso soup) back at the accommodation. The morning tour lasted from 6.30am - 8.30am.
The accommodation provided a fleece blanket to each pax to bring to Zenkoji temple to keep us warm during the morning praying ceremony. We went on 30 Dec and it was SO COLD.
Overall interesting experience but accommodation price is pretty steep IMO.

This hotel has a very cute door control rule, that is, we cannot come back after 9 o'clock in the evening, because after 9 o'clock, the door of the hotel will be locked, and we can't come back or go out. Then please note that the bathroom in the hotel is shared. There are many toilets, but there is only one shower room for bathing and it is shared by men and women, so friends who want to book should pay attention to the above two points.
Apart from these two points, this is a very special hotel with a lot of accommodation memories, delicious udon noodles, not too small rooms, very exquisite and cute breakfast, and friendly staff.

The hotel is very close to Zenkoji Temple on foot. It is a very special experience to attend the morning class at 6:30 in the morning.
Transportation: Across the road from Nagano Station, the buses to the city are all at the station entrance (both 1 and 7 are OK for Zenkoji. I took 1 bus which is closer. I bought the ticket before getting off). After getting off the bus, you can walk to the hotel in a few minutes.
Hotel service: There was a Japanese waiter on the night we went there, but it was difficult to find someone if something happened.
Hotel food: We booked a one-night stay and two meals. Although they were all vegetarian, they tasted surprisingly good. In addition, I ordered grape juice for my daughter, which tasted special in beige.
Hotel facilities: You can't ask for too much from the facilities of the shukubo. Try not to bring luggage. We stayed in a Japanese-style room on the third floor. If you bring luggage, it will be very difficult to carry it up the stairs by yourself. Plug: There is no USB, please bring enough two plugs; Toilet: Only on the first floor, no room, you need to run down every time if you live upstairs; Washing: Only in the bathroom on the first floor and near the men's bath, it is relatively simple, and there are no face wash and skin care products. Although the room has air conditioning and a gas stove, the overall temperature is not high and it is a bit cold, but surprisingly, the tatami is very warm. I looked at it and it turned out to be Nishikawa's down quilt. The hotel basically has a curfew at 9 pm.
Temple sightseeing: Buy a 1200 pass for Zenkoji Temple at the hotel. Volunteers will lead you to the temple for morning classes at 6:30 in the morning. As an experience, it is very good, but remind you to dress warmly. The time for listening to the chanting is a bit long. My feet are sore from the cold. The volunteers finish at about 8:30. After returning to the hotel for breakfast, you can go to Zenkoji Temple to buy amulets and worship on your own. There are many souvenirs and food, as well as Starbucks on the street directly opposite the main temple. If you are not very tired, you can walk back to Nagano.
We encountered heavy snow when we returned to the temple after breakfast. It felt very good. I wish you all a happy trip.
