I typically stay away from W Hotels as the overall vibe tends to lean toward the 20 something year olds. However, after having had many disappointments with the local Marriott properties (JW, Westin, Sheraton, Joseph), I decided to give the W a try. It's a pretty hotel, and in my opinion its in a good spot. Not quite downtown, but not far removed, either. Check in was not swift, as the front desk tends to be understaffed at times. But I was given a "Fabulous" suite (I paid for that) but turned down for an upgrade. And, I've been an Ambassador since they started the program. The suite was nice, clean as a whistle, but fairly "spartan" in terms of comfortable furniture. Both lighting (very poor lighting, by the way) and curtain control are fairly complicated and all by switches. I've never had difficulty opening the curtains by hand, but apparently they feel we're not capable. Bathroom was adequate, although virtually no water pressure as they have all of their restrictors in place. Apparently the ocean is in danger of emptying. In reality, the hotel saves a fair amount of money (also know as profit) by not giving us an enjoyable shower experience. They have a lounge on the rooftop (all the hotels have this feature) that is very nice, and looks out over the downtown area. You have to keep going up to the bar to get your drinks, as the service staff is impossible to find. Which brings me to my main focus of my stay. The service level at this hotel is absolutely TERRIBLE. The gentleman that helps with your bags when you arrive, was the ONLY helpful person at this property. The rest were totally useless. I tried to order simple ice cream for room service after I left their "restaurant" and the person who answered the phone was neither knowledgeable about toppings, and he put me on hold five times ! The next day I tried to take advantage of the "free" breakfast that they offer. It took ten minutes to get seated as there was nobody to seat you, another 10 minutes just to get coffee and place an order. Another 15 minutes for the scrambled eggs to get to the table, not as I ordered them, and they had to be sent back. At which point I left as I had to catch a plane. If you can get a favorable rate, it is a pretty hotel, although quite disfunctional and DO NOT expect any type of efficient service here. It's not happening.
