I just spent four nights at Ocean West, which is much more than usual, and I welcomed every minute of it. It was probably my 10th visit or so, and each time is even better than the previous one! First to greet me was the manager, Kali, who made the airport run to pick me up. She arrived with a huge smile and welcomed me back by name! Who does that? And as the days wore on, I realized that everyone asked me how I was doing, and welcoming me back. As a former field archaeologist, I have stayed in a TON of hotels, Air BnB’s, rental houses, etc., and I have always traveled on my own time/dime, so I am comparing every other place I’ve stayed, and Ocean West comes out on top! The 10-room hotel is small and sooo personal. If you want or need something and they don’t have it, they will bend over backwards to accommodate you. Someone is almost always available to drive you somewhere if you need it — and is cheaper than a taxi. One night Kali told me that I could get takeaway from the restaurant at the bottom of their driveway, and she went and picked it up for me, because I am very mobility-limited. Btw, that restaurant is relatively new, and delicious! All of the rooms are different. The bed choices include singles, queens, and king-sized. And view options are courtyard/gardens or pool/ocean. Rooms vary in size from “cozy” to palatial. On the upper floor, each bedroom has a balcony with furniture, allowing you to hear and see the pool, and the ocean beyond. Speaking of which, there aren’t a lot of other hotels in Nassau that have a pool elevated way up from the ocean, but with a faultless view! The dining room makes it feel both homey, and fancy at the same time, and I love the artwork such as the statue and the framed historic fabric fragments! The artwork in the bedrooms is very inoffensive — save for the very gaudy new paintings, which aren’t my taste, but may be others’. The most important thing in a hotel room, for me, is a comfortable bed. I have substantial, chronic back and knee pain, but it all melted away within 30 minutes of laying on the beds — the mattresses are like nothing I’ve ever slept on before!! Heaven. There’s a firm layer underneath, to support your body, but the top is softer and really just perfect. It’s hard to get out of bed at this hotel! There is a billiards/game room that has an honor bar located on the bottom floor, right near the swimming pool. Every once in a while, folks in there can get a little rowdy and loud, but I’ve never heard noise from in there beyond 8 or 9pm. I usually talk to the guests, and every one of them has said they love the place and are so happy they chose it! I also love the Italian marble floors and the gilt paint on furniture and wall trim. I suppose it’s remotely possible — if you are stuffy and close-minded — that you won’t care for the gold accents everywhere, but I think it’s campy and wonderful! The rooms are not laid out along a linear hall, as is the case with corporat
