We booked the Esplanade Hotel for a special occasion, for one night over the Easter weekend, and specifically requested the best room with the free standing bath tub. When we arrived we were pleased to be able to check in at 1pm, and we had the room we had asked for. The receptionist was friendly and gave us the relevant information. That evening we ate in the hotel restaurant, and were seated with amazing views over the sea, which was brilliant. The chef kindly made salads for us, as he had just changed the menu and had taken it off, yet we were really craving it, as had looked previously at the online menu, so we really appreciated that. The only let down was our side order arrived so late that we had pretty much finished our mains by then. That night however we were awoken 3 times, which somewhat tainted our stay. When you pay that much in advance for the best room in the hotel, for couples, it’s very shocking that the reservation team would book a group of young lads right opposite us. This group started banging doors and loudly banging then at 3.30am, talking loudly, going along the corridor in and out of each other rooms. It started again at 4am, and the last bout 4.45am. We were totally shattered as I realise the hotel can’t control what other guests do, however you do expect to get a nights sleep, as that’s what we book a room for. The guests were totally ignorant to do that, but the blame rests with the person who would book them opposite that room. We had to pre book a breakfast slot, and the coffee took ages to arrive, we had finished our first course, and when it did arrive the waitress had given us tea, not coffee. The porridge was dry and rubbery, and did not come with the honey etc it said on menu. I didn’t bother to ask for it as by that point we were just glad to be checking out. The restaurant was quite empty, so it wasn’t like they were making mistakes due to being packed. We did enjoy the stay to a point, it’s just little things that could easily made it so much better. We did think as we had been in touch with the hotel on the phone and via email, and had paid a lot of money for the one night in said room, and that it was a special occasion, that they may have added a small touch to our room, but nothing. We realise it’s more extra charges for such things, but a little gesture would have gone a long way. We have stayed in 3 stars before and had more perks. It’s a good hotel, and we realised it was family friendly before booking, which we have no issues with at all, it’s just the large groups who want to go out clubbing and boozing all night. Which wouldn’t have affected us if we hadn’t been saddled with them opposite us. So sadly not the stay we were so excited for.
