I was a big supporter of the franchised "The Salt Cove" in the bar of this hotel, prior to it being taken over, so I had high hopes for the redevelopment. The hotel itself looks 100 times better than it did prior to redevelopment. It had stood neglected for years and had become an eyesore. The redevelopment is fantastic, the bar/restaurant area now really looks the business. BUT... I can't quite understand where the new owners are pitching. If they're pitching at high quality food - they've fallen far short. If they're pitching at a local drink hole - they've fallen far short. The food is average - the aim seems to be nice pub grub, but they haven't reached that standard. At present, I couldn't describe it as anything other than overpriced. At £16.50 for burger and chips, I'd expect something which really pleases, but what an is delivered is something you'd likely get a pint with for £7 at Wetherspoons. The prices are inflated on food and drink. It fails as a good quality eatery as there are cheaper, better quality options locally and it fails as the local pub because of the prices of the drinks. I appreciate that the Inn Group have spent a lot of money on this venue, but as a pub/restaurant, for me it's one I'd choose to walk past in favour of better options.
