Patterdale Hotel

Firstly the staff were friendly and efficient, secondly the hotel allowed us to have dinner as a non resident, that’s where the positives ended I’m afraid. We had to pay in advance for the meal and as we went along for drinks, very unusual. Where our true disappointment came was from the quality of the food. Our starter of garlic mushrooms on garlic bread was returned as it was too over powering with garlic. The salmon roulade was adequate. The roast beef was well cooked and quite tender, the vegetables and potatoes had been around too long and lacked flavour and freshness. The stir fry chicken was a poor imitation of the real thing, while it was edible, it was quite bland. Further disappointment came with the deserts, very poor cheesecake, soggy base and rubbery filling. Even the chocolate ice cream had no flavour, just coloured frozen water. It felt like the food was aimed at guests (tourists) who didn’t have a choice and would never be returning anyway. Would recommend the White Lion pub as an alternative in Patterdale.
YHA Helvellyn

Six blokes from Manchester stayed for 1 night on Saturday 23rd June 2018. We climbed Helvelyn and then hiked down Striding Edge into Glenridding. We parked our cars in a car park near Thirlmere water not realising this was the wrong side to tackle Striding Edge the safer way on aswel. It was only when we arrived in Glenridding that we discovered it was a 3.5 hour walk back to the cars on the roads or a 40 minute taxi drive back to Swirls car park. We had already been on the mountains for 6 hours. We spoke to the local farmer who gave us MIKE the local taxi drivers details. He charged the 6 of us £45 to get back to the cars and we then drove back to Glenridding in our own cars. When driving to the hostel we were surprised how far back into the mountain of Helvelyn it was! The idea of walking back and to from the hostel to the pubs was a bit off putting after a major hike, so we paid Mikes the taxi drivers sister in law £10 to pick us up and drop us off in the village. The drive is about 6 minutes and I would guess 35 mins walk. On arriving in the hostel the computers were down and we couldn't have access to our 2 rooms. I didn't understand the full issues as they had our booking sheets and only have so many rooms. They had to keep calling head office . Anyway after 30 mins or so it was sorted. The rooms are basic but clean. The bunk beds are really comfy ,but the rooms are really hot to sleep in even with the windows open and a cold stream outside.
Wayfarers Independent Hostel

Just spent 4 nights at the Wayfarers hostel in Penrith and I'm so glad I did. Very clean warm and welcoming establishment, very well run by helpful folks. The communal kitchen is a great idea as you can save money by buying your groceries at the Penrith Aldi (10 mins walk away?) and cook your own meals. It's also a nice opportunity to meet other ”outdoors” guests who are staying there, over your morning (& complementary!) coffee for a little chinwag, sharing tips on good walks etc. It's also quite near the Penrith bus station where you can catch the X5 bus to Keswick (40 mins journey) for the beautiful Derwent water lake or as a good starting point for a trip to the rest of the Lakes. That bus journey alone is worth it for the stunning views! And the prices at Wayfarers are extremely good - definitely going back next year!!
