This is a beautiful historic old house set in lovely grounds, within walking distance of Malton and close to quite a few attractions. When arriving we missed it as it’s not well signed and there were cones on the pavement in front on the perimeter wall, however it’s easily recognisable once you’ve seen it once. Staff we met were lovely though they seem very busy multi tasking on reception, in the bar and the dining room. Our first impressions of our feature rooms were…wow! It was a privilege to stay in such a unique place. However on closer inspection both rooms could do with a little TLC - one room had quite badly stained carpets and our room had one bulb out in the chandelier, the voiles in the window were coming off their hooks and there was a lot of dust on the top of the velvet headboard. (We did advise reception on leaving, we were only there for 2 days). Also nobody came into our room to clean/tidy, not that we’re messy people, so we came back after a day out to an unmade bed which we thought was a bit odd. That said, our beds and pillows were super comfy, the shower was efficient and the WiFi was fine too. Breakfast was great both days with a good selection of hot food, as well as help yourself cereal, pastries etc. We ate there one evening and the roast in particular was excellent, and reasonably priced. We enjoyed a few drinks in the wooden panelled bar, there was a good selection of drinks on offer, but the coffee tables looked like they could have done with a clean. Feel with a little TLC and attention to detail this could be a perfect place to stay.
