This guesthouse was a wonderful surprise! It's located right inside Pingyao Ancient City, close to the East Gate, and also near the City God Temple and Confucius Temple. Since cars are banned inside the ancient city, it's very convenient to catch a taxi just outside. The guesthouse itself is tucked away in a narrow alley, giving it a real 'deep courtyard' feel. Once you step inside, it's a whole different world – a truly exquisite and elegant courtyard. Looking up from the open-air patio, you see the bright moon at night and blue skies with white clouds during the day. The owner is incredibly kind and welcoming. They provided transportation tips in advance, gave us a free paper map of the ancient city, and even recommended key sights, routes, and local specialty dishes and restaurants.

I've traveled to over thirty cities in the past two years, and this was my first time choosing a guesthouse within an ancient city. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this hotel, located right in the ancient city, had very modern facilities, including central air conditioning, and hot and cold running water. The environment within the ancient city is beautiful, but what truly stood out was the exceptional service. I felt completely at home. They offered shuttle service to and from the high-speed train station and provided all sorts of assistance. I even forgot my glasses during a tour, and one of the staff members ran to bring them to me – it was incredibly touching. The location is also excellent, very close to the bustling South Street.

Every brick and stone tells a story. Every street and alley narrates tales of the past and present. Kang Qian Ji Mansion is located at No. 33, Chang Xiang Street, within the ancient city of Pingyao. It was constructed in 1838 during the reign of Emperor Daoguang of the Qing Dynasty. Currently, it is a county-level cultural heritage site. It was originally the residence of Wang Jin-ting, the manager of the Pingyao Tiancheng Heng Bank’s Hankou branch. Wang Jin-ting (1859–1938), whose full name was Quan Yi and whose courtesy name was Jin-ting, was from the village of Xi Zhang Zhao in Pingyao. In his youth, he worked in the Tiancheng Heng Bank. After the bank’s collapse, he was recommended by Lu Rongting, the governor of Guangdong and Guangxi, to serve as an assistant manager at the Guangxi Bank. In 1924, Wang Jin-ting purchased the residence at No. 33 Chang Xiang Street in Pingyao’s ancient city, which had originally been a government residence. The courtyard’s floor plan features a pair of phoenixes spreading their wings, with the phoenix facing the grain market and its tail extending over the Helaoxian Bridge, symbolizing vitality and auspiciousness. The courtyard has weathered the passage of time, and with the changes in society, it was acquired by Kang Qian Ji Catering Company in 2025. We uphold the “Deren” principle of the Jin merchants, striving to restore and maintain the original state of the courtyard. The courtyard’s brick carvings of the麒麟 delivering children symbolize the owner’s dedication to preserving the Jin merchant culture and their best wishes for the guests. The wooden carvings of the phoenix and dragon support the pillars, showcasing the courtyard’s grandeur and elegance. This guesthouse is located right inside Pingyao Ancient City, making it incredibly convenient for exploring the city's attractions and enjoying local cuisine. We arrived at Pingyao Ancient City Station by high-speed train, and the guesthouse offered a pickup service from there, which saved us a lot of hassle. The room was clean and tidy, with underfloor heating throughout, as well as an air conditioner. You could walk around barefoot without getting cold. The bed was a large, comfortable 'kang' bed, a local specialty. The building itself is over 300 years old and a protected heritage site, so staying here offers a unique experience and a connection to historical relics. The guesthouse owner was very approachable and friendly. They enthusiastically introduced us to the city's sights, helped us plan our itinerary, and gave us many helpful tips. They also warned us about certain people to avoid in the city – it's always reassuring to have local insights when traveling. We were truly grateful! The recommended dining spots were also affordable and delicious. We look forward to visiting again!
