I had an okay stay here ... the hotel itself is clean, centrally located within walking distance to most things you'd want to do and in a safe area. Portland, Maine is quite a destination given all the restaurants/bars in a small area, so don't be surprised if this Hampton Inn hotel is as expensive as a 4 or even 5 star hotel in Manhattan on the weekends! My main complaint about this place is the nickle and dime parking situation. It costs $35 'per night' to park here ... pretty pricey! However, it only goes until check-out time at noon ... otherwise they make you pay for an extra day, or move your car. What?? We arrived at 9 p.m. and were made to check out at noon. That's 14 hours ... for $35?? PLUS the added cost of parking beyond somewhere else. To make matters worse, I asked the front desk if they could extend it a few hours so we could walk around the city and have lunch and they said no. (even though there were tons of open spaces in their lot) I asked if there was at least a garage nearby that charges by the hour, so we could have a little time to walk around ... they shrugged and said 'there are lots of garages around'. What they COULD have told us is that meter spaces are FREE on Sundays! There were tons of meter spots open near the hotel ... which we avoided because during the week they only give you 2 hours max ... but we found out from our waitress that on Sundays, you can park all day for free. (this is not marked!) Talk about unhelpful ... the front desk could have shared this with us! Another thing I didn't like is, when I was checking in, I pulled up to the sign which said, 'Stop Here for Valet'. The valet seemed annoying and told me rudely to pull backward and park behind the last car on the other side of the entrance. (It was your sign dude!) I had to back the car up about 10 yards and then sort of parallel park on the other side of the wall. I feel like for $35 per day, HE should have done this! The breakfast was a typical Hampton Inn breakfast ... the area was absolutely mobbed with kids and clueless people. Very few open sitting areas and the food was gross. The scrambled eggs had to have been powdered as they were basically sitting in water. The only real edible thing was the waffle ... and the bottom stuck when removing it. The entire hotel also smells like stale breakfast food all day/night. A little positive ... the bathroom was nice and big and had an actual door! (frustratingly, many hotels are going with barn doors, which slide, but always leave a crack) The bathroom was well insulated, so you couldn't really hear in/out. The shower was a step-in shower/tub with a curtain ... the showerhead gave pretty good water pressure and it was hot. The room wasn't cramped ... although the pillows were probably the worst I have ever experienced at a hotel. We both woke up with stiff necks. It was like sleeping on a rolled up shirt. The bed was also way more hard than I like them to be. The heat/AC blew very loud. I loved th
