The Mark Spencer Hotel

There appeared to be a misunderstanding between the hotel and Trip.com as we booked the stay with breakfast stated as included but the hotel reception said they had not provided breakfast for a long time, since Covid19 started. They needed to sort this between themselves. However, the manager was gracious to refund us the cost of breakfast at a nearby cafe. The location of the hotel was near to a number of bus stops for different directions. The view from our room window was very poor, just an internal air well.

Corner suite was excellent, as was the location. Only comment is the blinds don't totally block out the morning light.

Some friends had previously stayed at the Mark Spencer and recommended it to us. We appreciated the location because it was central to the majority of the activities we had planned. The room was great. Very comfortable bed, and it actually got so quiet in the middle of the night that I had to put white noise on. The staff were helpful and kind.

End of an era for staying at this hotel! No breakfast offered Monday/Tuesday, no security at the front entrance and I literally dodged piles of human excrement outside. And no USB chargers. Skip the value and upgrade to another spot for a safer stay.

Don’t do it too yourself- lots of other options in the area! It’s nothing like the photos which portray a luxury hotel experience/ smoke and mirrors and good photos from when it was first renovated. Firstly it’s diirty / the carpet is filthy, the room smelt and the furniture is all marked and scratched. The worst polyester linen I have come across in a long time. No jug in the room and no daily room cleaning. It’s also noisy with a building site next door. Check night staff very unhelpful and and unfriendly. Seriously it was a big mistake to book here - don’t do it. I do wonder if people are paid to give good reviews of bad hotels ….

After an initial issue, the hotel went out of its way to make everything right. I am extremely pleased with their professionalism and adherence to service standards. Honestly, I was blown away by their willingness and politeness. The building is in an amazing location close to food, shopping, and a concert venue. The architecture is very beautiful, and my room was quite spacious. I absolutely plan to stay there again in the future.

Nice amenities and great staff. We had a great time exploring the Pearl District and lounging in the hotel on a wet Portland weekend.

The floors were dirty and had not been vacuumed. The coffee table had what looked to be ground ********* all over one end and was also on the floor by it. The baseboards were scuffed and dirty and in places (in the bathroom) missing paint from wear/damage. The bedsheets had what looked to be a blood stain, so sleeping under the covers wasn't an option. The shower was very dirty in the corners, so much so that it was discolored. The soap dispenser was rather dirty as well, though my hand shook when taking that picture. A picture on the wall near the toilet had blood and snot spattered on it, possibly from a sneaze? The ceilings in the main room were covered in white mold, and i had allergies from it all night. I, unfortunately, did not notice most of this until I returned from my business in the city at nearly 2 AM. At that point, there was nothing I could do about it and nowhere else to stay. I woke early and packed to leave well before the 12pm check out. I was not asked how my stay was, and I was quite tired from not being able to sleep well so I avoided confrontation in the moment and emailed the hotel. It is now Sunday at 11:30 am and I still have not heard back. The staff were all very friendly and I wanted to love the place, but I travel often and hotels are my home from home and I need it to be clean. I wasn't given the option to upload all my photos but I have more.

The hotel was great! Clean, comfortable. Spacious room. And walkable from the train station. But poor Portland. The tents and the garbage and the zombie people put a big damper on our enjoyment of the downtown area. Stay at the Mark Spencer if you have to go to downtown Portland. But don't go to downtown Portland just for fun.
