Villa Neri Resort and Spa

This hotel is really beautiful. The drive up to the hotel is like driving up to a country house in the Lake District. The hotel grounds are immaculate and very pretty. Etna can be seen from the hotel as well as views of the surrounding hills and countryside. On entry to the hotel it feels very high end, the decor is stunning and the staff on arrival were welcoming and friendly. We definitely got the feeling that nothing was too much trouble during our stay. We were informed that use of the spa throughout our stay was complimentary which was a nice touch. Upon arrival we were asked if we wanted to make a reservation in the restaurant to which we agreed, however after seeing what was on offer we quickly changed our minds. There are two tasting menus available 120-150 euro per person. None of the food listed appealed to us and there was no way we were prepared to pay that price every night. Luckily we had hired a car which was much needed whilst staying at villa Neri. Sadly there is very little available in the surrounding area so in order to find nice places to eat you have to be prepared to travel. Normally this would not be an issue however it is a long way down the mountain every evening around hair pin bends and no street lighting!!! It was such a shame that the hotel didn’t offer a half board option or even a menu offering steaks or fish. We did actually eat in the restaurant on the last night as we just couldn’t face driving yet again. There was an option to choose dishes off the tasting menu separately. I chose a spaghetti dish which I was disappointed in as it was very expensive and very small. On the positive side the wine was lovely and the service amazing. The breakfast at the hotel was one of the best hotel breakfasts we have had. There was nothing that wasn’t available, everything you could possibly want was on offer and to a very high standard! The juice was so good as was the carrot cake!!! Our room was very spacious, the bed very comfortable and the cleanliness was of a very high standard. We had a couple of treatments in the spa during our stay, the price was reasonable for a spa but the facial I had was a little disappointing. All in all we enjoyed staying at Villa Nerri however we would not return due to the remote location and more importantly the lack of food options in the restaurant in the evenings. We would have loved to have eaten in the restaurant every night if only there had been some more affordable options. Thank you to all staff at the hotel who were all very welcoming and professional. If absolute peace, tranquility and luxury is what you are after then this could be the place for you but car hire is a must!!
Hotel Malavoglia

Etna Hotel

The hotel itself is beautiful and rustic. Great views of Etna by the pool area. There are binoculars in place for closer views. The pool was refreshing. There were always plenty of sun beds and shaded seating areas. There was also public showers, toilets and a shed selling food and drinks from 12pm-7pm The staff are very friendly. They arranged a wonderful trip to Etna. Our room was huge. The shower was great. Air con, hair dryer, toiletries and mini bar fridge were available. Shame there was no bottle opener for the beers. Towels were lovely and soft. They were clean for the most part, apart from being provided with a dirty one on the last day. The only mirror available was in the bathroom. Another in the bedroom with a table would have been nice. WiFi in the room and throughout the hotel was excellent. If you turn left from the hotel, you walk towards the town of Mascali. It feels a little dangerous walking this way, as there is not always a footpath. However, drivers are aware and are respectful. Mascali train station is approximately a 30min walk and worthwhile doing for a trip to Catania at a cost of €4.80. If you book via Trainline, your ticket does not need to be validated. If you turn right from the hotel, you are in Giarrre. There are safer footpaths in this direction and lots of restaurants and bars the further you walk into Giarre. The closing days of the restaurants vary. It’s worth checking before booking. There are also cash machines in Giarre if needed. We were fully aware that the area of the hotel was remote and restaurants don’t open until the evening. What I did find surprising was how much the hotel charged as a result. I expect to pay more at hotels, however €4 (the same price as the beer) for a small Coke soon adds up on a family holiday. Also the breakfast selection is quite small at €8 per person. The hotel restaurant is lovely with attentive staff and a terrific view, but the portions were small at a higher price than anywhere else we tried. We did save some money by using a local cafe in Giarre sometimes for breakfast. On our last day, we found a shop and stocked up on 8 cokes for €5.60. However, the hotel discourages bringing drinks and snacks that has not been purchased there. Despite the price, it’s a wonderful place to stay and we had a great holiday.

What a find! The host was super friendly, excellent communication and the place was better than expected. Super cosy and comfortable with all new appliances. Plenty of space to park and a nice garden area also around 20 mins from etna. Loved that we had breakfast included and that it was set up for us every morning 👍🏽Would 100% recommend and would definitely stay here again!
