The hotel is NOT what you think. Do you need a car rental? Probably! But … the hotel is around 10 miles from the Rapid City Regional Airport and there’s a free shuttle. Did I know about said shuttle? Did I get a message from the hotel telling me about the shuttle? Nope. I arrived (after 10 pm) and learned that Uber doesn’t pick up passengers from the airport. I left the airport and saw two vans parked outside. I asked one of the drivers what it would cost to MainStay Suites Rapid City. The driver told me it would be free. The hotel has a contract with his company. Once at the hotel, the driver came inside and filled out his voucher. It was easy, once I knew about the service. The next day, I decided to head to town. The walk would have taken over an hour and a half. After spending 40 days walking the Camino de Santiago, that wasn’t happening. Uber to the rescue. And, because this was Rapid City, the driver cut me a deal. He dropped me off downtown. I walked around, took pictures, had lunch, looked in shops, and then he picked me up and drove to Mount Rushmore. I took pictures, checked out the gift shop, then he drove me back to my hotel. My point being is … I figured out how to get around, without renting a car. The hotel itself houses airport staff, doing monthly rotations, from out of town. So, rooms are set up like mini short term apartments. There’s a restaurant directly across the parking lot, from the hotel, and a Cabela's sporting goods store, next door. All this to say, the property wasn’t what I hoped for, but it didn’t stop me from getting what I wanted.
