Hotels near Shiretoko World Heritage Rusa Field House in Rausu

This inn opened in August 2018 with anticipation of demand for foreigners visiting Rausu for overseas unexplored tours. On some site, it was introduced as the only inn in Rausu that can speak English. Perhaps because of that, Booking.com had more word of mouth information than Rakuten Travel and Jalan. By the way, Sarai means ”inn” in Persian. It is said that the inn run by the West travel trip is only this Shiretoko Sarai, but it is a wonderful inn that is a waste. The price is reasonable and the room is not so large, but there is enough space to spread one large suitcase. The room was separated into Ａ building and Ｂ building, and we stayed in Ａ building with reception. After finishing the reception at the reception on the １ floor, take off your shoes and go up to the guest room on the second floor. There is no elevator. The floor of the room was flooring and had disposable slippers, but it was clean enough with barefoot and clean enough. Amenities are all available, but if you need room clothes, you need to request and borrow them at the reception. There is only a parking space for ５ cars in front of the building, and if it is full, you will use the ２ parking lot located a little far away (about 100 ｍ). We chose a plan with dinner, but on the first day we had Western food (appetizers, local seafood carpaccio, roast ezo venison, homemade kelp bread, grilled plate of rausu silver cherry blossoms and summer vegetables, Tomato pasta with clams and homemade smoked salmon, homemade cheesecake ＆ after-dinner drinks), Japanese food on the second day (steamed oysters, small bowls, sashimi, fried cassbees, boiled black galleys, Shabu-shabu from Rausu, white rice from Hokkaido ”Nanatsuboshi”, vanilla ice cream ＆ after-dinner drinks), Western food on the 3rd day (appetizer platter, roast Ezo venison, octopus and red crush Ajijo, Homemade kelp bread, lamb lemon pepper grill, octopus and tomato garlic pasta, homemade cheesecake ＆ after-dinner drink) was very delicious every day. It is recommended because it is sufficient in quantity and affordable in terms of price. By the way, guests can serve draft beer (small) or a soft drink if they show their JAF membership card.

This is a typical ’boom & bust’ hotel, like the thousands of similar hotels you see all over Japan. It’s enormous, with lobbies, restaurands an common areas the size of airport hangars, huge rooms with separate tatami areas and massive onsens. All of which is in various stage of decay. This particular hotel is set back from the harbour, up on the hillside, presumably for tsunami reasons, which means you have to drive everywhere, to the boat tours in the harbour and the really nice little seafood shacks on the waterfront. The hotel offers, like all Japanese hotels, a myriad of ’settu’ options, all very confusing: breakfast, dinner and onsen package. Ditto with unlimited sake. Lunch and onsen and a spa treatment; don’t take any of these. The food is terrible by Japanese standards, and the gigantic restaurant is more like a East German Communist Party Headquarters canteen circa 1953 than a restaurant. You know whst I mean. Our room was huge, but with peeing wallpaper, slightly smelly damp wall-to-wall carpeting and (my pet hate) one of those pre-fab plastic bathrooms which has all the solidity of a bouncy castle. Our friends stayed at the Kitanokobushi Shiretoko Hotel, and I wish we had too. This is actually built this millennium and is right on the water. I highly recommend you stay there instead. As for me, I am thoroughly fed up with these depressing, smelly 1980’s concrete monsters.

When we arrived hotel staff asked whether our trip is a celebration for some occasion? When we told him is a graduation celebration, they gave us 4 glasses of complimentary wine. What a great surprise. They also have nice photo gallery displaying Hokkaido native animals photos around the lobby. We had a super pleasant stayed here.

1. This hotel is the hotel I expect the most. The public facilities are very good, but the room we ordered belongs to the original old district, which is still relatively old. 2. The most inexplicable thing is that we ordered one berth and two meals, including dinner. As a result, the front desk informed that dinner must go down to the mountain to eat, and when you book the downhill bus, you have to wait a long time. Dinner was a salmon set meal and there was no choice. Although there are still a lot of salmon, but the meal is single, just a bowl of paella, not suitable for children. We were wondering, why ca n’t we eat at the hotel ’s buffet dinner. The front desk informed that the scheduled package is different, but in Ctrip ’s booking, it was not stated that the room package we ordered was to go down to the mountain for dinner, too Disappointed, I don't know if it is a Ctrip agent problem or a hotel problem. It is rare for this brother to have a slightly discriminatory attitude. 4. There is no ice in Shiretoko this year, there is no ice at all. If you want to go for a walk on drift ice, it is recommended not to go. There is no ice at all. It is only informed on the same day that the trip is canceled. There is no ice. It is too depressed. He told me in advance that I wouldn't go to such an uninhabited place and went for a walk on drift ice, only to tell me there was no ice. Because Shiretoko transportation is very inconvenient, it can only be chartered, the cost is high, and the number of public transportation is very small. This hotel is on the mountainside. If you want to take a bus to get the bus terminal down the mountain, drag your luggage, even if there is a shuttle bus Very inconvenient. An unexpected surprise is that there is a drift ice festival in the sunset platform next door. The ice cave there is completely different from the ice sculptures in Harbin, like a natural ice cave, like a maze. Although small, it is very pleasant. 5. Hiking projects like girls are very tight and there are very few tour guides, but in terms of our experience, we can go by ourselves without a tour guide. The guided walking project is expensive and not worth it, because there is no big risk, you can go by yourself. We also see tourists walking on their own, and it is said that snow shoes can be borrowed at the visitor center. Even if you don't wear special snow boots, you can walk on the snow. Originally I expected to follow the guide and see wild animals such as foxes, but this time we didn't see any, just saw the deer. If you go by yourself, the only thing to solve is the traffic problem. There are buses to get there, but there is only one round trip a day depending on the time.

Stayed 2 nights. The ryokan experience starts with being met in the car park, bags whisked away, shoes off at the entrance and slippers provided. Then an orientation with a very nice Vietnamese lady, one of the few members of staff who spoke English. We were given a detailed explanation of how to use the two different onsen, and lots of other info that you really need, because this is an experience like no other. The rooms are beautiful ( ours looked onto the stream), the (long and many) corridors are decorated with beautiful art and ikebana, and there are lots of drinks dispensers everywhere - the corn soup is delicious. The food was some of the finest we had anywhere during our 4 weeks travelling in Japan (including a couple of Michelin- starred restaurants), presented exquisitely, and wonderfully flavoured - a true feast over several courses and a couple of hours. Breakfast buffet equally memorable. We only went here to see the Blakiston's Fish owl, so the whole experience was a wonderful surprise - if you've seen the Studio Gibli film ”Spirited Away” you will get a sense of what it was like. And we were the only westerners here, which was great, and only added to the sense of being on a different world. On that note, if you're an uptight westerner who doesn't like getting naked in front of strangers, you might struggle here - there are no showers or washing facilities in the rooms ( apart from a basin), only those in the onsen themselves. I don't think we would have chosen to go if we had understood this beforehand, but I'm SO glad we did go.

The lobby felt a bit narrow, but the room was more visible from Kushiro port and I felt good. Breakfast was delicious with rice, free rice, and all. ８ months, but I was able to disinfect my fingers at the entrance, get my gloves, and eat with peace of mind. I couldn't slow down because it was early in the morning, but I want to stay again. It was better if the bath was on the top floor.
