My wife and I decided that we needed a short break away in the Indian Summer weather we were getting, so I did a search on *********** for properties in the Southend-on-Sea area, and this one looked to be good value for money. I did my usual checks of having a look at the location of the hotel on Google Maps and also Streetview, and was a bit concerned that it was located near an industrial estate and very close to the airport. I had a read of some of the TripAdvisor reviews, some of which gave it the thumbs up, so we decided to book it as the two nights were only going to cost £126 on ***********, which was the rate for a double room without breakfast. When we arrived, although I had looked at the hotel on Streetview and other photos, I was fearing the worst, as the kerb appeal of the hotel is not too good to say the least. I parked up in the **** filled and rubbish strewn car park and we went into reception to book in. This was a really easy procedure and we were soon checked in by the pleasant receptionist. Our room was across the car park from reception in the annex. First impressions of the room were good as it was very large and looked immaculate, with a good standard of decoration and maintenance. Everything was there to make our two night stay quite a comfy affair. The bed was large, with a comfortable mattress, but the pillows were cheap polyester, and were uncomfortable and lumpy. We made do and didn’t complain or ask for better pillows, so don’t know if there were any better available. The bedding looked clean and fresh, however when we pulled the quilt back there was a long black hair on the sheet. It did initially gross us out, but as the bedding smelt fresh we assumed that it was from the head of the maid and simply got rid of it. We slept very well during our stay, and the hotel is very quiet, with only the occasional plane noise coming from the airport, but the sound is muted, so no real problem. There was plenty of kit to make a brew, and all of the crockery and kettle appeared clean, but we always wash them before use anyway. The TV was a large flat screen on an articulated arm, so no problems watching TV in bed of a night or in the room whilst getting ready to go out. The picture quality was also good. The ensuite was a good size, with a shower, washbasin and toilet. The shower cubicle was a fairly small square, and any person that is carrying some extra weight might find it a problem to shower properly, or even get in the shower in the first place. There was plenty of shower gel and hand soap in the ensuite. The towels were a good size, but had seen better days – one in particular was rather threadbare, although they were changed out for fresh, better quality ones on the second day of our stay. The shower didn’t have a non-slip mat, and was quite slippy, so care needs to be taken when having a shower. The ensuite could definitely do with a shelf as there is simply nowhere to put your washbag or anything else that you wan
