~ Oh dear .. The reviews we read didn't endear us with this Hotel, but we had booked a steam train journey to Stirling and back at nearby Linlithgow, and we needed somewhere close to board our steam train .. The initial view of the hotel reminded us of a 1950's - 1960's type building, but once inside we met friendly and helpful smiling staff .. A smile will launch a thousand happy stays, in my humble opinion .. A sign warned us that it was under renovation. Of course, that was fine, no problems for us .. Our double room was immaculate, with a lovely and large shower cubicle. The bedding was immaculate too. We were very happy to stay here. It wasn't to London Hilton standards, but so what? We wanted a reasonably priced two night stay and we got it .. The meals were fantastically priced. We had intended driving into town for meals but there was no need. A full Scottish breakfast was included, but not being a big early morning eater, I was more than happy with a pot of tea, pure orange juice, cereal, two poached eggs, haggis and baked beans .. Yum! In the evening we joined in a karaoke night and all the locals seemed to be using this hotel .. err .. as their local. That was great for us .. They were full of advice of where to go and what to see. That was fab! Everyone oozed friendly'ness. There were views of the naval shipyard where they were building the two UK aircraft carriers that we don't have aircraft for .. No problems. We live near Sellafield, so a shipyard is a refreshing change .. Will we return here? YES! We enjoyed our stay, and don't forget to visit Rosslyn Chapel (A Knights Templar Church featured in the Dan Brown 'Da Vinci Code' book/film), less than a half hour drive away .. Thank you Caledonian Hotel for your friendly'ness and help .. PS: Here's an album of our images .. https://flic.kr/s/aHsjXPy7JM

Turning up at this place I did wonder where I had booked. Not at all inviting from the outside and located in the middle of a housing estate. Large free car park which is covered by cctv. Upon entering the hotel I needn’t have worried. Check in was easy and the girl behind reception nice and friendly. I was allocated room 2, although only small, neat and tidy and spotlessly clean. Ideal for a quick overnight stop. The bar and restaurant were great. Extensive food menu at unbelievably cheap prices for the portions and the quality of food. I went for the steak and ale pie which was great for less than £7. Beer was good as well at £3 a pint. Breakfast was included in the room rate and it was superb, filled me up perfectly for the day. Service from all the staff in the reception,bar/restaurant and breakfast staff was first class. They could t have been friendlier and more helpful. I will be working close by again soon, would I stay again, in a heartbeat. Don’t be put off by the outside, give it a try. Thanks for a great stay.

I stayed here more that 3 month over the time and got in nearly all of the deferent rooms. The ground floor and the top floor is fine. Not alway so much water pressure on the top but that’s fine. But the middle floor.. wow. Look at the pics and you will understand. The staff is fantastical and the bar is really nice. And that’s why we stay here so much.

Booked 11 months in advance and only looked at the picture on the web site. When we arrived we where greeted by very pleasant staff and I can't fault them, but the room (room 10) and the hotel are disgusting. Old dated damp room with water stains and wall paper coming of the walls. All round the hotel there are signs apologising as there are refurbishing. But after reading the reviews you realise that my room has been complained about before. Noisy fan, toilet paper stuffed in the window to stop the draft, old furniture, Wallpaper damp and dated. So why are they still selling this room with out sorting the problems? My partner spilt coffee and it splashed in the sheets. So the next day the maid just remade the bed with coffee stains on it ☹️ The bar is like a working mans club and loads of bad language as you walk into reception. As I said the staff are nice. But avoid this place at all costs. I'm not one to complain to staff as things should never get this bad and if they can't see it's wrong after all the bad reviews then I'm wasting my time saying something.

Room was nice enough but key cards didn’t work . Prices up since I last stayed here which is every three months for RN events . Will try the two local guest houses next time.. No wifi connection possible in room 6 (and others going by conversation at breakfast ) There was no vending machine for snacks , breakfast service and quality was good . Quite quiet
