Entering through the gate, it is an open-air coffee shop surrounded by green plants covering the walls. In the warm afternoon, it is very pleasant to chat and drink coffee with friends in twos and threes. Entering from the door on the right hand side is the front desk of the hotel. The stairs are relatively narrow, and the hotel rooms are relatively large and clean. The breakfast is a traditional English breakfast.

We had a fabulous time at this hotel. There are some fascinating historical features. Our room was bright & airy overlooking the courtyard. It was peaceful & clean & had everything we needed.

We stayed here on Sunday and I was very disappointed with this hotel. The location is wonderful but the rooms need some attention, as do the hallways and breakfast room. We came back to the hotel on Sunday night around 10.30 for a drink. Unfortunately the hotel doesn't have any staff at night. There was only one guy on shift trying his best to be a bar man, security, receptionist, and deal with a customer complaint. It was really hard to watch. It took over 40 minutes to get our drinks, and the order was wrong, and my partners pint looked like one of the worst pulled pints we have ever seen. This member of staff is clearly not trained on the bar area. The advantage of staying in a hotel is obviously staff on call to look after you and a bar to get a drink. It is super unfair to the guests and the one member of staff that the hotel had on shift trying his best to fill the roles of at least 3 members of staff. Breakfast was awful, I had to ask 3 times for items to be restocked, no eggs, no milk, and no bread for toast. I was actually told the bread was getting defrosted. I was greeted with an attitude from the staff member when I asked for the eggs and bread. My food ended up being cold, waiting for the items to be refilled. Obviously, the staff aren't trained on how to run the breakfast area. They should be trained to make sure the stock is replenished before there is nothing left for the guests. The lack of staff training and attention to detail really let's this hotel down. You do not get the hotel experience because the staff need training, and the management needs to look at the service that is being offered to guests at night. It is not acceptable to have one member of staff on dealing with the reception area, complaints, security, and bar services. I definitely wouldn't recommend staying here. Its not cheap and there are far better hotels to stay in. Don't waste your money

The hotel building is impressive but the rooms are very dated and in need of some serious upgrading. Furniture was from the 80's and broken/stained/damaged. the overall cleanliness of the rom was poor with thick piles of dust behind anywhere that isn't in open view and the windows were thick with grime and dirt both on the glass and the window frames. The bathroom tiles were cracked and the grouting stained and dirty. the bath paneling was broken and warped and the shower curtain old and too small. overall this was way below expectations.

Pros: lovely big room with big comfy bed, nice big bathroom with bath and shower, tea and coffee making facilities. Friendly receptionists, nice lounge area with fire. Perfect location but limited parking. Cons: no radiator in the bathroom, crittall windows so bedroom and bathroom were cold as no secondary glazing. Could hear the pigeons outside the window all night. Radiator in bedroom didn’t work and walls were paper thin, could hear couple next door snoring all night.

We were hoping for a quiet and relaxing stay, but both nights we were disturbed by a lot of noise (the manager tried to tell us it was drunken guests but that was not the case. to suggest this is insulting to the handful of guests that were staying. All were elderly and certainly not the type to roll in drunk at 2.45 am. It was staff and everyone who complained know full well this is the case. We were refused dinner on Saturday evening because the kitchen was closed for a function. We had not been warned about this, and had to venture out in the bitter cold, when all we wanted to do was eat at the hotel and hang around there for the evening. On Sunday morning, having waited 45 minutes for our breakfast, which we had prepaid for, we were told that the had run out of food, so we wouldn't be getting any breakfast. We complained, and have just received a full refund, however we are not at all happy with the way the manager swept most of our complaints under the carpet. Reading between the lines, she didnt want to antagonise the staff, all of whom seemed pretty unhappy in any case. I understand that the hospitality industry is having a staffing crisis, but this hotel will have a customer crisis soon, if they don't learn how to treat their paying guests properly.
