We recently dined at the restaurant at El Encanto in Santa Barbara with a party of 8. We brought 4 bottles of wine. The meal was over $1,000 which then had an additional 20% fee, assumably for the servers, added on. Perhaps it was the size of our party? The corkage fees were completely undisclosed: $45/bottle for the first 2 bottles (totally fine with that) and $95/bottle for 3 or more bottles. It would have been nice at a restaurant of this supposed quality to inform patrons of the severe jump in corkage fees for 3 or more bottles of wine. We did not ask what the corkage fees would be because as a group of world traveling, wine drinking friends, we have never encountered corkage fees this obscene. I understand this is to dissuade patrons from bringing their own wine which, from my experience, is usually far better wine for less exorbitant pricing. For all of you who like to bring wine to restaurants, beware of this little money grab. IF we had been told, we would have been happy to purchase wine from the restaurant. But sadly, we did not have that option. Therefore, we see no reason to return to this restaurant.
