My friend and I planned a day trip on the Carlisle to Settle railway with a 2+ hour layover in Settle at lunchtime. We stopped a passer by when we got off the train and asked for a recommndation for a light lunch. Our adviser suggested the Golden Lion - great food, she said. It was just across the road so we accepted the advice. After we were seated we asked about light lunch option and were give the 'lunch' menu which was a variety of sandwiches. Initially shocked by the prices, we decided that on the strength of the recommendation this would be something special so both order prawn marie rose on brown bread, one with the included chips and mine without. After a lengthy wait our plates arrived. Anticipating the king of sandwiches at there prices my plate had two small slices of supermarket brown bread with some lettuce and prawns out of a ready made pack. No garnish, just the poor little sandwich. Wishing not to spoil our day by complaining, we ate the food, paid and left. The cost of the sandwiches alone (x2) was £27.90 !!!!! It was complete robbery. As we walked further around Settle in stunned rage, we noticed a wide range of attractive coffee shops. We suggest to other travellers that the Golder Lion is only for those who have won the lottery.
