I was re-directed to Galley Hostel by the superb Mi Casa, Su Casa hostel and didn’t know what to expect. Couldn’t find any reviews online. Turned out that Galley Hostel has only just opened. The two guys that run it (an Albanian and an American) gave me a warm welcome, showed me around and explained their dream with well-justified pride. On the premises of a former school in the vibrant centre of Shkodra, it couldn’t be more perfect. A huge playground, elegantly re-purposed, holds little nooks, tables and is developing into a multi-use courtyard with games, music, bar and chill-out spaces. Zac (the American) has hostelled widely and knows what is needed, knows the details that make a place special. He is creating the best hostel experience he can dream up. ‘I’m charging for a room but I’m really selling an experience’, he smiled. I paid €10 Aug 2022. Brilliant value. Right now, even under construction, Galley is a great place to stay but give this place a year or two and it will be the best hostel in Albania.
