A warm welcome from the helpful manager, Chris. He was friendly throughout. The location is excellent, and it was great to have an on-street parking permit (we had to leave a £10 deposit). However, I think this hotel needs to up its game, as it does feel run down - lots of little things e.g. toilet seat needed fitting properly, the towels were a bit tired. Our mattress needed replacing and was uncomfortable. I should add that the bed linen was clean and fresh. And the TV worked fine – which is not always the case in hotels. The view from our room to the rear was grotty, and regular overflow/sounds of water flowing (flushing?) outside. The room did appear clean at first glance but a search for a lost ear-ring on the morning we left using an iPhone torch told a different story, particularly at the edges of the carpet and along the sides of the bed (were they matchmakers?). Whenever we came in or out of the building, people were smoking on the steps or just in front, and the steps had a covering of ash. Premier Inn and Travelodge have a similar price point in the town. They have no character, obviously, but provide an overall better experience and you generally know what you're getting. It's a shame, as the place does have potential.
