An exquisite stately home of exceptional quality and detailing. Thoroughly enjoyed the quiet, the grandeur and the generous, informative owner and staff who shared in its history, accommodation details, WiFi, breakfast et al. Looking forward to staying at ‘The House’ soon and will recommend the same to friends and family visiting St John’s Newfoundland

This is truly a lovely spot....but it's important that your expectations match the reality of staying at the Ryan Mansion. If you are looking for a full-service front desk and restaurant, this is not likely going to be the right spot. However, if you are looking for a relaxed ambience with down home hospitality, then the Ryan Mansion could be right for you. If you are looking for an elevator to get you from floor to floor (there are 3 floors) or a porter to help with your bags, you might also be out of luck. But if you are looking for a hundred-year old home with a great breakfast every morning at 8:30 or 9:30, again, this could be the spot. Mary is the chief, cook and bottle washer and makes everything tickity-boo at the Ryan Mansion. For our stay, she was most helpful and never short on sharing a story or two. Finally, the location on the map in TripAdvisor is off. The address is correct (on Rennies Mill Road) but it is near the top of the hill overlooking the downtown core. Getting down is easy, getting back up is a little more of a chore. It's like if you have ever been to Lisbon or Porto, you can enjoy the water, but you know you have to walk back up the hill. Give it a try.....the Ryan Mansion offers a great deal.

Fresh fruit cup served in elegant dish with a superb breakfast both mornings.We loved our strong fresh brewed coffee!! Our room was truly amazing…!!! Mary our host was the BEST . From the moment we stepped inside until the last minute we left!

Great find. Recommend highly St Johns is a very fun city. So glad we stayed at Ryan Mansion -- good breakfast every morning, charming hotel and great walkable location. BUT, the real treasure is Mary who shares Newfoundland color with a smile.

The hotel appears to be set up to suit the owners rather than the guests. It was a baffling experience. There is apparently only one member of staff, Mary, an older woman who had to have a rest after climbing two flights of stairs to our room, and informed us that she was going to put on the clothes dryer in the utility room next to us so it would be a bit noisy for a while (it was 7pm at night, why not earlier in the day?). There appeared to be a bar but no one to serve, and no idea of whether it was an honesty bar or not. We were offered a choice of breakfast at either 8.30am or 9.30 am which was not ideal, and although we got downstairs at 8.32am, we had to wait 15 minutes before Mary arrived who informed us that she had been there at 8.30 exactly but then had to make breakfast for the guests who'd arrived on time!! The house itself is beautifully decorated, the bedrooms large and comfortable but there was no milk or sugar on the coffee tray (and no one around to request some). In short, it could be a perfect bolthole in the city, but we were certainly left feeling we were inconveniences rather than valued guests. The Mansion needs additional staff and help for Mary who appears to have to clean, cook and take care of the guests on her own.

The hotel, is more like a B&B with luxury private bathrroms. In this day and age, a rare find, exquite woodwork, art, and furniture. Can you imagine.... a fully stocked bar for guests to use with an honesty booklet for saying what you used. In case you don't look closely at the site, previous guests have been king/prince Charles, and princess Margret.
