Steenwijkerland Hotels with Parking

This hotel was a huge let down, its old and its not looked after for years (thats how it feels). We were going to celebrate our anniversery and thought it looked great on the pictures and 4 stars is always 4 stars. Our first room had a carpet full of stains, big stains and they looked old. Bathrum looked fairly renovated, but there was a smell of sewer in there. The wallpaper was lose on several places and it looked like it was damaged by water. Our second room had similar issues, hard floor so no stains but sewer smell in the bathroom, walls dirty, a big hole was repaired with filler but not painted, a big wooden board covering one of the doors to balcony, it looked like a temporary and crappy fix. It seem to us that the maintainance left a few years ago, or they have a shoe string budget, or they are not allowed to fix things. When reception, with not a second of doubt hands us a towel to cover the shower drains and a bottle of perfume then you know this is something they do all the time. INstead of fixing the issue, give the customers perfume! It can be seen everywhere, the tennis cours was overgrown, the lift made sounds and doors squeeked, the hallways looked old and dirty and there was a general feel of neglect. Service was nice, and breakfast was good, but the rest, dont go there..

The good: Staff was very friendly and tried to accommodate the guests' request (e.g. when we wanted extra jug of orange juice, or a couple more of the delicious croissants). Breakfast was quite good, and my guests visiting from our home country enjoyed it. The place is very beautiful, and would be perfect for out-door lovers. In October, it's quite cold, so the crowd is missing. The not-so-good: We stayed at the sole vacation house. The hotel is pet-friendly as it allows pets to be brought it. But as my family do not have pets, the vacation house had quite a strong dog-smell and that bothered us quite a bit. The bad: But I had a very bad experience with the Reservations system and the price. Booking.com had very confusing price quotation for the house, and instead of what I thought was a good deal for a family of 5 (I had anticipated paying around 250 EUR plus breakfast), I ended up paying almost 360 EUR for 1 night stay. I apportion the blame three ways: 1. Myself: for not being careful enough to ensure the exact price I'd be paying. 2. Booking.com's room reservation system: I had selected 5 guests on the website, and the quoted price was around 160 EUR, excluding breakfast. After including breakfast, I had expected to pay around EUR 250. But Booking.com screwed it up...I ended 280 EUR for the rooms and an extra 60EUR for breakfast, for a grand total of EUR 360. 3. The administration and owner of the hotel: Immediately after receiving Booking.com's confirmation email (this was 5 days before my actual stay), I had written to the hotel, informing them that I am actually with 5 guests. They said 'fine'...but did not mention that the price I had received from Booking.com was only for 2 guests. Even upon checking in, the staff failed to mention the actual price I had to pay. I received a shocking bill upon checking out the next day. To be fair, the owner explained to me their room rates, which was explicitly shown in their own website. My charges was exactly legit and correctly done, according to him. But when we jointly replicated the reservation on Booking.com's website, he saw that it would indeed confuse guests, and thus agreed to give me some 'restitution' by asking for my Dutch bank account number. I mailed that to him a couple of days later....and 2 attempts to follow up on this, by e-mail and by phone....still nothing. Still waiting after 3 weeks for some form of compensation. Primarily due to this experience: 1/5 star. If not, I'd rate it at least a 4-star. Be very careful when using Booking.com when booking the vacation house. Visit their website directly to make any bookings.
