I booked this inn for a one-night stay in January. The staff were very welcoming, and lit a wood fire stove. It felt very relaxed and cosy The room was a decent size, very well equipped and extremely comfortable. I had a steak and ale pie from the specials board - excellent, as was the cask ale. There was a small selection of wines, including a reasonable merlot. Breakfast was freshly cooked and as good as I've had. With easy parking, an absolute gem!

First time staying here and had a wonderful experience. Young man and lady who seemed to be running the pub could not have been more helpful. Had a meal on the night which was delicious as was the full English breakfast which was included in the price. Room was basic, but very clean and had all the amenities you would expect (coffee machine, kettle, fridge, hairdryer, iron etc). Bed was wonderfully soft and comfortable. Would definitely stay again thank you for a lovely stay.

We have stayed at a couple of different establishments in Street in the past, this is by far the worst we have stayed in. The room was freezing cold and a sign said not to change the temperature. So no heating at all The pub was in darkness by 10pm so there was no one to ask about the heating When we booked this accommodation the breakfast was included. On the morning no one was in the pub and no one answered the doorbell. A voicemail and text were sent but no reply. The other people staying also had the same problem. We had to go and pay elsewhere for breakfast. We expect to be reimbursed for not having the breakfast that was supposed to be included We emailed the King Alfred when we got home and 3 days later we are still waiting for a reply

We booked a last minute overnight stay & the reviews we'd read were spot on. Lovely (busy) young man showed us to our room (No 1) which was spotlessly clean with lovely crisp white cotton sheets, towels & flannels. Heating was already on in our bathroom (late afternoon arrival) & there were fantastic tea/coffee making facilities available - our very own coffee machine!! As the sun was shining we ordered beers & sat in the garden, followed by our evening meals - Lasagne/Salad & Beef Pie/Mash (fab chunks of lean meat in tasty gravy). Bed was super comfy & the following morning we chose the Full English Breakfast which was included in our overnight stay! What's not to like - you deserve to do well - you work SO hard & tirelessly. I highly recommend this place, great value for money.

Recently taken over by the new owners. Fabulous service by the young male host who seemed to be around constantly. Room was comfortable and had all the amenities you need. Really dog friendly and even made a sausage for Lucy’s breakfast. The pub is comfortable and busy without having to queue. Really enjoyed our stay and the pub. Thank you

We ordered drinks and 4x dinners, firstly my glass was disgustingly dirty, so much so I could scrape it off the glass, then my jacket potato with prawns was awful, I had to pay extra to get a salad with it, the jacket potato was small and unedible, rubbery as it had been in the microwave, then he brought me another which was black hard and under cooked. The ploughman's was loads of salad and loads of bread and a bit of ham, A real let down, then we realised why the pub was empty

I stayed at the King Alfred some years ago and it was great. Now that it has been bought by Punch Tavern Breweries no food is served, there is only one person on site who says he is the manager. There are never any clients there. Everything written on their website is nonsense, the place is dead. The only being around is probably the ghost of King Alfred.

The people who run this pub could not be nicer. So kind and helpful. But the pub is a disappointment. It’s dead and lacks any kind of atmosphere. The one night of entertainment was pretty dire. The room was clean and the bed comfy but it was small, cramped and smelled of damp and air freshener. It had no proper light as it is frosted glass, the carpet was stained and the furniture tired and dated. Breakfast was small. Not worth the extra. It’s such a shame as the people were so lovely and it could be so much better with a bit of effort.
