Hotel signage is either nonexistent or confusing and there is no reception area. We were shown to a garden room in the annexe which was very tired looking, walls poorly painted, furniture was basic and lacked character. The only opening to the outside was the door which meant, because we could not leave it open, the room became extremely stuffy overnight. The wall heater in the room was not working and had been replaced by a heavy freestanding one that had to be dragged across the room to be plugged in. The heated towel rail and extractor fan in the bathroom were also not working which meant our towels remained damp. The noise from the showers being used in the neighbouring room was terrible, as if there is no soundproofing at all between rooms. Returning back to the hotel on our third day, the refreshments had not been topped up, the bed had not been properly made and no cleaning had been done that we could see. At breakfast, we found on more than one occasion the cutlery was dirty. We expected more from a four star country house / boutique hotel. These problems had such a cumulative effect that we decided to cut short our stay by a day and informed staff present at the time of our issues. We emailed the manager, Daniel Hannan twice but received no response.
