I was pleasantly surprised staying at this charming inn during a family visit . The new owners go above and beyond to make sure every guest is welcome and comfortable. I stayed in the beige king room. It was a huge lovely room with a super comfortable bed. The linens were top quality and soft . The day was a hot one , but the room cooled down and I was extremely happy to have a cold room. I’m always hot . The bathrooms are old , but this is an old inn. You cannot expect a modern bathroom in an 18 something century inn. Sorry - I’m not a history buff . My 92 year old mother cannot walk up steps and they immediately switched rooms for her to have a ground floor . Her room was huge with a kitchen . It would be perfect for families staying longer than one night . It is very close to the water and you can walk downtown to the quaint little downtown. If you are interested in staying at a charming place vs the same old same old hotels - the Essex Inn is a warm welcome. My sister held my niece’s birthday party at the Inn as well . The food was good, the staff so helpful and they really made my niece feel special . I would definitely stay here again .

We stayed two nights in The Yellow Room to attend our niece’s high school graduation in King William, VA. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE CHAIN HOTELS!!! The owners, Greg & Jennifer, were very engaging with their guests. Breakfast was “to die for”. No powdered eggs as with other hotels that provide breakfast. Rooms were relaxing, extremely clean & beautiful. The 1710 Tavern across the street had wonderful food & excellent bar. We have family that reside in the area & this will now be our go to spot when we visit our family.

It was like walking into the most Beautiful and best parts of the 1800s! Historical, fabulous and most accommodating in every way! Treated like royalty with tremendously prepared breakfasts by phenomenal chef / proprietor! Surrounded by a beautiful little town on the Rappahannock River, visible at every turn. Truly a must-visit!! Will return for certain!!

We were greeted by the owners Greg and Jennifer and given an extensive tour of the house along with the complete history. We stayed in the beige room which was light-filled, comfortable, quiet, and incredibly clean. The perfect mix of historic with modern amenities. Breakfast was a feast as other reviewers have noted. We used The Essex Inn as a base to explore the Northern Neck (NN). We didn’t need lunch the breakfast was so scrumptious and filling-individually made keeping dietary restrictions in mind. The entire stay was so pleasant. We hope to visit again soon!

I will be honest- I had never heard of this bed and breakfast until I goggled, " nearby hotels," to a party we were attending. I booked over the phone, and later found out I was speaking with the new owner. When we arrived, they gave a tour of the property. Our room was clean and perfect. Breakfast was unbelievable- a full 3 course feast. I wish I could have had dinner, but we already had plans. Thank you!

Greg and Jennifer were wonderful hosts and their historic Inn is GORGEOUS! The spacious rooms, quiet atmosphere and perfect location in historic downtown Tappahanock are PERFECT for a getaway from surrounding cities like Washington DC and Richmond or beyond. A real treat was the delicious 3 course hot breakfast (included) that is cooked to order with fantastic gourmet coffees as well. Best breakfast potatoes and sausage I have ever had. We are looking forward to going back in a month or so after their new fine dining restaurant 1710 Tavern is open across the street in June 2023! A great foodie or history buff getaway destination!

Beautiful Inn owned by a wonderful welcoming couple. The Inn is very beautiful, excellently restored. We were warmly welcomed by Greg and treated to a history and tour of the Inn. Our room had a gas fireplace and was lovely and inviting. The snack area was furnished with sodas, water, wine, and tasty treats. It had a coffee and cappuccino machine as well. That night we had dinner with friends nearby and they returned with us to the Inn. We sat next to the fire in the parlor and toasted with wine. Greg came by to see if we needed anything and was quite entertaining with stories and histories. Breakfast the next morning was a feast. Freshly baked in-house goods were the first course, followed by a poached pear. The third course included sausage, potatoes, and a goat cheese/spinach omelette. It was delicious and more than filling. We were given extra treats for the ride home. The Essex Inn is a treat not to be missed. Greg and Jennifer make it extra special. We hope to return soon and have dinner at their newly renovated Ordinary across the street. It is a gorgeous building from the 18th century with original windows.

The first thing you notice when you enter the majestic-looking Essex Inn is the 12-foot-high ceilings. Even posh European inns aren't that spacious. The owners are welcoming and can answer just about any question you may have about this 1850s inn near the Rappahannock River, or the historic town where it's located. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and tastefully furnished, but where the Essex Inn excelled beyond all of our expectations was the gourmet breakfast. We started with fruit turnovers, chocolate croissants, a delicious fruit compote... and then "What would you like?" (Our request: How about a goat-cheese-and-spinach omelette with bacon, hash browns, and sausage patty? "Coming right up!") Coffee (we had a couple of espressos and cappuccinos) came from one of those huge, DIY, push-button industrial-quality-grinders-frothers-brewers-blenders that Mark Zuckerberg would envy. We've stayed at some amazing places in the U.S. and abroad, so trust me, you will have a memorable experience at the Essex Inn in Tappahannock.

We were in town with our daughter to tour St. Margaret’s School and stayed at the Essex Inn just across the street. The house and the owners are very charming, and it was wonderful to get a feel for historic Tappahannock. The Christmas decorations and fireplace made it that much more warm and inviting. An elegant and delicious breakfast with beautiful china and state of the art coffee maker, plus the sun streaming in through the leaded glass windows panes, made for a great start to the day. We could barely drag ourselves away for our tour. Kudos to our hosts, Greg and Jennifer, for a great experience!
