We stayed at numerous Pousadas over the years and expected a similar experience at Angra de Heroismo. The castle is perched on a rock just outside the town centre, the room are a modern addition within the walls. We had booked a superior room with sea view. The view was fine. The room was a dated and worn. The minibar empty. The restaurant does not serve lunch, so we had go out as soon as we arrived to get something to eat. No dinner either on the first night, as the restaurant was claimed by a wedding party. There is a bar, with cocktails on the menu, but the barman had no idea how to make them and did not make an effort. We opted for a glass of wine, but the barwoman could tell us that they were either red or white (who would have guessed?), no options, no advice. Breakfast was good. wide range of items, both hot and cold. We had dinner the second night. This was not a memorable experience either. The menu was plastic card, with limited options. The food itself was of mediocre quality. Only the desert was recommendable. Wine advice was not coming. We were directed to a table with 3 bottles of red and white to choose from. This place has lots of potential, but it needs some work: update the rooms, get a new chef, train the wait and bar staff so that they can actually help customers. Why not serve lunch? The way it is now, it is not value for money
