Kawayu Kanko Hotel

There were only a few of us on the streets in the whole town in winter. The lady at the hotel front desk spoke fluent English and enthusiastically helped us make a plan according to the bus schedule and book a taxi for us, which was great. The hot spring is very good.

The hotel is located in the center of Kawayu Hot Spring. I booked a hotel room and two meals. The hotel room is not very clean. The hot spring area is quite large with four indoors and one outdoor. I counted: since I came alone in May 2011, May 2012 (with my family), May 2014 (with my family), February 2017 (alone), and this time I came with my family. This is my 5th stay. This time I stayed again as an accommodation for sightseeing with moss phlox in Higashimokoto. I'm confused about Lake Akan, but I'm in love with the quality of the hot water at Kawayu Onsen. This is a typical Japanese-style hot spring hotel.There are also many attractive scenic spots, such as the view of the heartbeat of the nearby Mt. Io, the Mashu Blue of Lake Mashu, and the panoramic view of Lake Kussharo from Bihoro Pass. This time, we stayed for two consecutive nights, and in addition to viewing the moss phlox in Higashimokoto, we also visited Engaru Taiyo no Oka's moss phlox (a small but well-known gem) and the tulips in Kamiyubetsu. (I thought I would go further and see the moss phlox on the waterfall and complete the Okhotsk 3 major moss phlox, but the tulips at Kamiyubetsu were amazing, so I decided to take my time, so I thought I would be able to get there in time for dinner at the hotel.) (I didn't have one, so I gave up.) This time I rented a car with plenty of room instead of my usual compact car, so I felt less tired driving. I have stayed at other hotels at Kawayu Onsen, but I feel this is the best overall, and I have chosen Kawayu Kanko Hotel the last five times. (Up until now, I had been able to arrange this individually, but this time I used a JAL package tour where you can choose your flight and hotel.) The new coronavirus pandemic has also caused changes in the way hotels provide meals. . Previously, there was a private dining room and a half buffet with local produce, but now we have set meals. It would be an unavoidable measure. The goodness of private room-style dining remains the same. The food was also delicious. Indoor baths with high and low temperatures, and open-air baths with medium temperature.The quality of the spring water is excellent. The front desk warned us at check-in, but please be careful as the bathroom floor is slippery. You can take your time in the low-temperature bath, and the hot spring effects will reach the core of your body. The reason why the surfaces in your bathtub look black and dirty is because the plating is peeled off by the sulfur content of the hot springs, and is not due to poor maintenance. I hope there is no misunderstanding. This is proof that it is a real hot spring. The breakfast venue is the convention hall, Laputa Hall, across the breezeway.It is a comfortable venue with a high ceiling. I don't really want to tell you about such a good hotel because I would be in trouble if I couldn't make a reservation when I wanted to stay. (Please come and visit Kawayu Onsen.)

This is a long-established hotel in Kawayu Onsen, and the hot spring source is right in front of the hotel. The interior has the impression of having been repeatedly maintained, but it doesn't feel old. The rooms are also reasonably Japanese-modern. The hot spring has a strong sulfur content, so there is some sulfur on the sink in the large bath, giving it a hot spring feel. Breakfast is buffet style, with a nice selection of local ingredients. It was very satisfying. The staff are also simple and nice.

Unfortunately the food was cold anyway.

The morning buffet has a large selection of items. The hot springs are fed directly from the source, and are highly acidic, which is good for your skin. There are three bathtubs, lukewarm, medium, and hot, so you can relax in them.
