The Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel at the NEC is a large hotel that you visit for a particular purpose – an exhibition at the NEC, a show at the Arena, or a Business Conference or Event at the hotel itself. So it is an accommodation and catering factory, and if you keep that in mind, it does that job very effectively. We stayed at the hotel to attend a Concert at the Arena. I had taken the opportunity to download the Hilton App which meant that we didn’t need to queue to Check in, or out, and I even used my phone to open the door to the room with a digital key. We could have stayed without speaking to any of the staff, although we did, and when we did so they were friendly and helpful. It may be the way that commercial hotels are going, but in a more relaxed situation, talking to the staff is something that can make a stay more enjoyable. The room on the 5th Floor was spacious, clean and reasonably well furnished, although it was slightly surprising that there was no mini fridge. The bed was quite hard, but still comfortable. There was an excellent selection of accessible electricity sockets and USB charging points. Often not the case elsewhere. The bathroom was well appointed, with nice white fluffy towels, shiny white tiles and plenty of lighting, although not quite sufficient for a perfect shave. The main fault was poor hot and cold water pressure – I didn’t bother to try to shower, which would have been less satisfactory for a longer stay. We had access to the Executive Lounge but that was busy and the available food seemed to be confined to a choice of nibbles, the main attraction being free drinks. We therefore ate in the ‘Brightsmith on the Water’ restaurant. Although the service was good, the food was disappointing and overpriced, and I was invited to give a tip in addition to the 12½% service charge. This is a hotel designed for the generous expense account. Breakfast was plentiful with good service, although I have had better in similar hotels. But it served its purpose – a decent stay in a good hotel near to the Arena, so saving a late night drive home. Better than average, but perhaps not quite very good.
