The original Grand burned down in 1996 and the new (current) place built in toe 2000s: a much more stylish and up-to-date place. My room (14) had excellent ocean views to the east and got full morning sun once the blackout curtains were drawn. The windows opened for fresh air, but there were also a ceiling fan and an A/C cooler. The room was nicely furnished - Queen-sized bed, wardrobe, desk, bar fridge, desk chairs, arm chair etc, and the bathroom had a super shower - plenty of hot and warm water (no really cold water in TI!). Meals in the bistro were huge and of good quality, and the complimentary breakfasts were once again, huge with scrambled eggs, mushrooms, sausages, tomatoes, baked beans etc, as well as fresh cut fruit, juices, coffees, toast. The room was about AU$260.00 per night, which is steep, but about average for all rooms on TI. The Grand is a short wealk from the jetty where the Horn Island ferry pulls in.

Booking was made for me and was an internal room. TV had no remote control. Light fitting in bathroom had no cover, tiles in the room had been broken and were shoddily repaired. No iron or ironing board. Wifi Password was not provided. Very disappointed with this room

Lovely staff and a good view from the bar but do not stay in the budget rooms. Budget means a stand alone room literally in the car park with a terrible smell, no opening window, a saggy mattress and the sound of the hotel’s air conditioner compressors running all night long. A hostel would be way better value.

We had a spacious room with a large bed (maybe a king?) and a single bed. The pillows were too high, so I requested replacements, which arrived very quickly. The bed was comfortable. The wifi was OK, considering where we were, it only dropped out a few times. The shower was amazing, hot with good water pressure, although our friends said their's was cold and took a while to warm up. We enjoyed our meals, especially the Barramundi. The room had a balcony, part of the long front balcony of the hotel, shared with the other rooms. The view from the balcony was amazing.

The Grand Hotel on Thursday Island is located in an imposing situation overlooking the waterfront and a short walk to the wharf and ferry area. Staff were excellent and helpful and out room large, clean, and very comfortable. The air conditioning worked a treat and the bed and pillow were very comfortable. The WiFi worked well. There were nice views from our room looking out over the waterfront and sea. The restaurant offered excellent meals and drinks were well priced. The town itself is only a few minutes walk and there is an excellent coffee shop in the town centre opposite the waterfront. A pleasant stay for a night.

Our room was made up promptly, we had fresh towels on request, they provided an umbrella when it rained. Staff always offered to help us with local knowledge and the fresh water each day was a great bonus. The kitchen provided a wide range of breakfast options, including fresh fruit, bacon, eggs scrambled and poached. They always had a fresh coffee brewing and made up a breakfast pack on the Good Friday Public Holiday. Air-conditioning was wonderful.Service and clean rooms top notch.

The Managment of this hotel are terrible. They make no effort whatsoever and are rude, unhelpful and unprofessional. I travel to Thursday Island regularly for work and will never stay in this hotel again. The Thursday Island Motel is nicer

I read a lot of reviews about this hotel before booking to stay. As I actually work in the hospitality industry I know ( only too well) that in many cases you need to look at the big picture and not the small but annoying issues. Also looking at reviews over a large period of time you can usually see the times when staff / chefs / management etc change. As for the Grand Hotel TI.....well remember where you are. Thursday island is exactly that ---AN ISLAND and everything has to be transported to the island...so therefore EVERYTHING is more expensive than you would be used to. The hotel rooms are clean , neat and comfortable .....BUT - a budget room is exactly that , and there is a reason it is a budget room. The ocean view rooms ( with or without a balcony) offer a superb ocean view ( and the sunrises can be amazing if you get up for that) , but you pay a premium for that. The food is typical pub grub in the bistro, nothing special , nothing flash but ( currently) well cooked and well presented - but like anywhere that always depends on what chefs they have working. There is an attached a la carte restaurant ( currently not open) that used to have an amazing reputation , but once again that would be due to the chef at the time, now obviously moved on . The hotel is close to most things ( relatively speaking), a short walk from the ferry arrival/departure point ( for Mcdonals ferry - not rebel , thou rebel put you on a bus for delivery to the front door). A short walk thru the hotel car park gets you to the main street ( for what it is). A short 10 minute walk gets you to the IBIS store( think IGA supermarket). Only one bank - NAB- with island opening times but plenty of atm's at the pubs. there are taxi's if you want to do a drive around the island ...perhaps a 10 - 15 min drive all up.
