I visited the Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel for the recent total solar eclipse. The physical hotel was okay. A standard upscale-ish hotel if a little worn. However, they were woefully unprepared to handle guests for this momentous event and as a result my family and I had a frustrating experience that frankly dampened our experience tremendously. The trouble began with purchasing the eclipse package. The website stated that there was a welcome party (for two adults and two children per reservation) upon check-in (April 7) among other perks. I called the hotel for information about the welcome party - not the 800 line but the physical Toledo location twice - and was told both times that there wasn't a welcome event but there was actually an event on the day of the eclipse on April 8. To make a long story a little shorter, when we arrived at the hotel we were told there was a welcome event and it was just ending (which didn't make much sense if check began at 4 pm, why would a welcome party end at 5 pm?) After some back and forth, the person in charge at the time begrudgingly gave us two tickets to the event on the 8th. It went downhill from there. We learned from the event location that there was actually no welcome party. We requested 3 additional tickets to the event and were given additional VIP bands that weren't honored on the day. Although this was a very personal experience, it has broader implications. At the core of the problem were communication problems among the hotel staff (everyone had a different story), a failure to take any accountability (all of our issues were presented as if it was our failure but we encountered other guests who were having similar issues) and an overall failure to treat us as welcome guests. We felt as if the staff was overwhelmed and that we were a nuisance. We also had a couple of more minor blips. There had apparently been someone in our room before we checked in who used the restroom and didn't flush the toilet adequately. And breakfast also wasn't great. The Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel benefits from not having much local competition in this hotel class. Yet, I would not entrust this hotel with any important life event if I had a choice. They may be fine for the occasional stay but based on this experience it is clear that they are not ready to handle large or special events. They are definitely not a shining example of the Marriott brand.
