Mawamba Lodge

Our stay was enjoyable. We loved the grounds, landscape, flowers, carvings, shrubbery and trees. The cabins would have been improved by having at least 2 chairs - inside and on the porch. We would have liked to have a posted schedule of tours, activities and times/info about these events.

Everything perfect location, hospitality, professionalism and kindness from the staff, quality cuisine, offer of different types of excursions. The best guides ever Gabriel who accompanied us from San José, Maurizio and Bryan Local guides , rally the best! The property is very nice ! Only advice to strengthen the mosquito nets and better seal the door sill, because often unwanted guests entered the room! OK Being in the forest, but it was not pleasant to find certain animals in the room or in the bed! For the rest I recommend it to all great structure and good all! Pura vida!

We had an incredible stay in Mawamba Lodge and couldn’t recommend it enough! From start to finish the whole experience was amazing and we couldn’t have asked for a better start to our holiday in Costa Rica. All of the staff were incredibly friendly from the tour guides to reception to waiters and cleaning staff! They couldn’t have done enough for us. All of the excursions and boat transfers were timely and staff kept us updated with plans if they changed for unforseen circumstances. The nature in the lodge itself was incredible, we saw sloths, bats and monkeys all from just outside our room! The rooms themselves were lovely and clean with ample space. We opted to do the optional night tour which was amazing and well worth the extra, we saw so many nocturnal animals and were given lots of information about them. The food in the restaurant was also delicious with lots of variety and a lovely atmosphere! We were also pleasantly surprised by the pool area which was lovely to spend some time around during free time in the afternoons! Overall I loved our time in Mawamba Lodge and would definitely stay again if back in Tortuguero I couldn’t recommend it enough!

Hotel in the forest, near the village of Tortuguero. Simple room with WC and small furniture. Breakfast, lunch and dinner à la carte and served in the hotel restaurant. Slow staff with no hotel training. The hotel does not provide written information about activities and there is no information about the resort and services. You have to ask about everything and be vigilant, because everything can change! The Mawamba group has several hotel facilities in Costa Rica and uses them to transfer tourists to and from its properties. The coordination between the group's transport services, which it uses to transport clients to Tortuguero, and external tour services should be better thought out. On the other hand, the winding roads and paths they use from Guápiles to get to Cablo Banco and then on to Tortuguero by boat, which takes 1 hour and 20 minutes, are not the most suitable, as they take up a lot of time and patience. The tourist's expectation of seeing the great variety of animal and forest life in Tortuguero is simply a fiction! It's simply marketing and not worth the money.

Mawamba was fantastic. The boat ride out to the lodge was exciting and the captains spotted all sorts of wildlife and stopped so everyone had a good look. The trip out took about 2 hours but my husband and I enjoyed every moment of it. The lodge is in between the ocean and the canal, however you cannot swim in the sea due to the rip tide and the sharks! We walked back along the coast from Tortuguero which was lovely. The lodge offered many trips, some included and some that were extra but they were really reasonably priced so worth taking part in (evening hike and early morning boat trip). We stayed in a King Jaguar bungalow which was away from the lodge and had a view of the canal. It was really quiet and had plenty of fans to keep the room at a reasonable temperature at night. Our safe did not work and the reception were informed, this didn't worry us a we locked out suitcases. The room was really spacious with a veranda. The grounds were beautiful, well maintained teeming with birds and other animals. The food was lovely and was included in the price. The lodge guides were really knowledgeable. Mawamba is a well oiled machine.
