Our room had a God-awful cleanser smell -- so bad we almost asked to be moved -- but it was a lovely big suite so we endured. It took us a while to realize that the likely cause for this extreme use of a cleanser was to cover up a pet accident. We observed numerous dogs moving about the hotel -- many quite lovely and sweet, and the hotel advertises itself as 'pet friendly', so dogs are clearly staying in the rooms. And let's just be frank: pets will occasionally have accidents. It's inevitable. And the next guest gets to stay in the exact same room. So what's a hotel to do? They cover it up with a ridiculous over-the-top scent that literally hurts the sinuses. This is the inevitable consequence of 'pet friendly'. If you travel with pets maybe you think this is an OK tradeoff. But we do not travel with pets, and we do not enjoy the thought that the previous guest's pet may have had an accident in the space we are currently occupying. And we certainly did not enjoy the painful smell of the masking cleanser. If you don't want to endure a painful cleanser smell that will hurt your sinuses, and you don't like the idea of sleeping in a room where some previous guest's pet has had an accident in the space you are occupying, perhaps this isn't the hotel for you. I for one, following this incident, have decided that I will no longer choose 'pet friendly' hotels if I have any choice in the matter. I'm going to vote with my wallet. I hate to be so negative in this review for a hotel that was otherwise pretty good. The staff was efficient and effective, the breakfast was solid, and the location was perfect for visiting our friends, but the smell was just so painful that it simply was not OK. And the windows do not open at this hotel, so we couldn't just open up to clear it out. Bottom line is we will not be coming back.
