The Bear Hotel

A nice little hotel with bar and restaurant, decent breakfast , really offering a nice choice of traditional or lite meal. Clean , helpful staff, especially the handyman who made sure i had a fan in my room. Small rooms but comfortable , just a bit too stuffy in the hot weather. All in all a satisfactory pleasant place to stay

Stayed here this week, and had a very enjoyable time, all due to the staff. These are genuinely caring staff, I had a clean and tidy room, I got efficient housekeeping, and very fine food well presented by the obliging kitchen staff. Simply the best. Highly recommended, go book.

We have stayed at the Bear a few times and have always been made welcome.We have motorcycles that we can park at the rear of the hotel for security.

We enjoyed our stay at The Bear. Our room was comfortable and heated up quickly when we put the radiator on. The shower was powerful and easy to control. Our only disappointment was that there was not a cooked breakfast due to staff shortages, but the continental breakfast was sufficient and we did not go short. Overall a very pleasant stay.

Room very comfortable, quiet and decent size. TV was not working, but no big deal. Staff super-friendly. Restaurant definitely worth taking advantage of. Very nice breakfast.

I thought the room I was in was badly decorated and looked very tired and sad. Certainly nothing near the ad. Bathroom was better with tiling, but no care forfinishing touches, which is a shame. Lots of internal noise intermittently from pipes(?) water. Heating. Staff helpful when approached. Breakfast also nice, with cheerful staff.

Good location with free parking after 18.00 in the public car parks. Breakfast is amazing and should be considered when comparing prices.

We had a meal in the restaurant for a Christmas family get-together. On arrival we didn't get exactly a warm welcome, but appreciated that they could be busy. We waited nearly an hour to order our mains. We had very specific dietary requirements due to intolerances and allergies. There was no specific menu so we were given 2 separate menus which had to be cross-referenced and made it quite difficult to work out. The food arrived and was very nice - no complaints regarding taste and presentation. However, when it came time to order dessert we were told that the chef left at 2.30 - the time was 2.32. We were not warned that if we wanted dessert we needed to order - just bluntly told that it was 'written on the menu'. Who reads all the small print when reading a menu! We left and discovered that we had been charged a service charge amounting to £23. Later that night my breast-fed baby grand daughter came out in a rash which meant that her mum must've ingested dairy. She contacted the restaurant to tell them and was basically called a liar. She pointed out that the goats cheese salad had been marked as dairy-free and they insisted that goats cheese wasn't dairy - it most certainly is and my daughter-in-law sent back a screen-shot from the NHS website saying as much. There was no apology and no sympathy - not even a 'thanks for pointing this out'! Not only was this terrible customer service, but bad business - if they had came and warned us about the chef leaving 20 minutes ahead of 2.30 they would have made at least another £100. We will never go there again and advise others to avoid.
