Hawthorne Inn & Conference Center

I stayed here for an event at nearby Salem College in both March 2025 and March 2026. In 2025, I had a great experience on the first floor. There were no issues with noise, cleanliness, etc. In 2026, things were not great from the start. I was checking in at the same time as a friend. We asked to have rooms near each other. I had booked about a month earlier and she had booked only a few days before. We were told that she had been given an upgrade to a top floor suite with a king bed while I had not and thus could not be even on the same floor. She was able to check in immediately while I had to sit in the lobby for about 20 minutes. A number of other travelers were sitting with me waiting for the standard room. When it was finally my turn (and this was with me arriving after check in time), I was given two breakfast passes for waiting. The breakfast area is not worth paying for in my opinion, though it did have a waffle maker. My room and my friend’s room were both very loud (my floor was one below the top). At one point, I was relaxing and such loud music was playing that I thought it must be my own phone. It sadly was not. Someone across from my friend’s suite on the top floor had clearly rented the room to have friends over to watch a game and the noise level reflected that. I was under that room and could hear a lot of noise as well. It did not quiet down until after 11pm. When the family in the room next door came in, I could hear every word they said and was thankful they went to sleep quickly. While taking a shower at 10:30pm or so, the handle fell right off the shower (see photos) and would not be reattached. As a woman traveling with a child, I was unwilling to have a man come into my room at night except for an emergency and managed to wrench the water off myself using a washcloth. This goop leaked right out of the handle and got on my hands. I ended up having to go to the desk for a forgotten toothbrush and mentioned the issue to the clerk. I said that I did not want someone coming to my room that night and she said there was no one to come anyway. It’s unclear what would’ve happened if I was unable to shut off the water. When I checked out, I showed the below pictures to the next clerk and she told me that I could call back on Monday and speak to the general manager. I didn’t ask to speak to the manager and was just reporting the damages. I would rather just be done with this place for good. I certainly won’t return so I don’t know what good me wasting my time to track down the manager would do.

I checked into this hotel about 1 AM this morning. And the lady at the desk had a attitude out of this world. And it’s very unacceptable to be able to check into a hotel and not met with friendliness. It behooves me to know that you could check into a hotel pay everything and still get looked at like you did something wrong. This is very unacceptable and I encourage all of my followers to never come to the Hawthorne. Because if they’re gonna treat me like I did something, and all I did was go lay down no circumstances do I want anybody to feel the way I felt checking into this Hotel.

My hotel room was very clean and smelled cleaned. I was very impressed. The property is a little old school, such as the elevators were smaller and older and the room key locks were the slide card scanning. However this did not detract from my stay it was just something you noticed. I really have no complaints at all.

Per booking the breakfast was free, however per hotel staff it was a charge per person.

This review is "NOT" for this Hotel they were courteous and respectful "Fred" was amazing! Don't book through Trip Advisor. Had family emergency left on and off hold from foreign country for well over an hour to try and cancel was third call! Was told I would not receive refund because it wasn't by 12am

The staff was welcoming but the hotel is dated and the room smelled of stale cigarettes that tried to be covered up with heavy cleaning fragrance. Not good for people with allergies or sensitivities! The room itself was clean enough but I wouldn’t stay here again.

Excellent stay! Hotel is well kept, beginning with the lobby. Staff welcoming and so very helpful. Room was spacious, very clean, and neat. Comfortable bed and linens, and everything needed for stay including a spacious workspace with plenty of connectivity. The buffet breakfast is an especially great value: reasonably priced, well kept and delicious. I will definitely choose Hawthorn Inn again for any stay in Winston-Salem. It's easily accessed from Hwy 421 and in close driving proximity to downtown, shopping, etc. Special thanks to those whom I obtained specific assistance: Brianna at the front desk who also helped me by phone prior to arriving and so helpful and pleasant upon arrival, Deanthony also at the front desk who happily and cheerfully greeted me the following morning and helpful with a Wifi connection, and Jasmine in the Buffet Room who was helpful and answered my questions as well as being a pleasure to talk to. These people are a vital selling point for providing excellent service!
