Ring the bells of celebration because our one night stay here was superb. So that we could each have our own bedroom, my friend and I booked an apartment that offered two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and it was just amazing. Although the photographs of the hotel looked lovely, I really don’t feel that they do justice to the apartment (#7) which also had a fitted kitchen (probably limited equipment, if self-catering), a massive lounge with a Juliet balcony overlooking the river Severn, and just a feeling of oodles of space. The view of the river was fabulous and I could have sat for hours just watching the swans gliding on the water, and occasionally taking flight, as well as the general activity on the water. The apartment really did exceed our expectations. We were welcomed with a complimentary glass of prosecco, which was brought to the apartment, before we went to eat in the restaurant. We’d booked the two course lunch set menu (served until 5.00.p.m) and it was excellent value at £16.95 each. Breakfast was fabulous too and we really enjoyed that everything was cooked fresh and served at the table with no buffet (hurrah for no heat lamps and awful congealed eggs). We both started with porridge, which had a couple of fresh raspberries, a couple of strawberries and a few blueberries, as well as honey and cream. The porridge was absolutely delicious with a slightly chewy texture (my friend described it as having some ‘bite’ which is probably an accurate description). I followed with sausage, bacon, poached egg and a few baked beans whilst my friend had pancakes with bacon and maple syrup (quite a stack of them, too!). My coffee, served with hot milk at my request, was excellent as was my friend’s fruit tea. Because of the table service, and all food being cooked to order, breakfast probably took longer than it would, had it been buffet-style, but we were more than happy with the trade-off. The beds were supremely comfortable, there was plenty of hot water for showering and the room temperature was easily regulated with the thermostat in the hallway. Although our apartment was on the third floor, there was a small lift which we, as a couple of oldies, appreciated! Service throughout was faultless and staff were unfailingly polite, helpful and cheerful as well as being very relaxed about the 11:00 hrs check out time, telling us to take our time and not to hurry. The hotel doesn’t have its own car park but we parked at Copenhagen Street car park (reasonably priced at £10 for 24 hours parking) which is just a few minutes walk away. We loved everything about Browns and I would describe our stay as outstanding.
