There is a shuttle bus to and from Yudanaka Station, and a bus to the Snow Monkey Park the next morning. Since we had to take the electric train back to Nagano after going to the Snow Monkey Park, we chose to let the hotel transport our luggage to the station for storage first. This is a paid service, but the price is the same as taking our luggage to the Snow Monkey Park to store it, which saves us the trouble of pulling it back and forth in the snow. If you need this, you can refer to it. Back to the hotel, the staff's service attitude has been very good since the pick-up and drop-off at the station. Even though the English communication is not very smooth, they have been patiently answering our questions. The dinner and breakfast were very rich, which was a surprise for us who have stayed in hot spring hotels many times. The free hot spring pool is not big, one indoors and one outdoor. If you don’t have a reservation, we won’t comment. Just a few minutes' walk away is Shibuya Onsen. There are also good hot spring hotels there, but the whole hot spring town feels a bit depressed, but it's nice to have less people.

The environment was all clean, but it was too far from downtown Kusatsu. It took 2 hours by car. I think it would be good for people who just want to take a hot spring.

The Ryokan is beautifully set, the staff were welcoming despite that fact english is not widely spoken. We chose the Japanese futon room with a river view, as we wanted to have a traditional Ryokan experience. This was a lovely room. We visited two out of the three onsens ( one was the private one, which is in the photos) in the property, which were beautiful but sadly not directly hot spring fed. We didn't have enough time to visit all the onsens in the village as lacked time but I am sure they are also beautiful. We did walk the village at night to see the different Ryokans and onsens. Breakfast and dinner were superb, they catered for vegetarians but you do need to let them know in advance and they do check with you daily about what you can/can't eat. The free shuttle bus to the monkey park and from the train station were a bonus. You do need to plan your trip back yourself. I would suggest that you plan your journey in advance as currently there are train cancellations and connections do not always match up.

This was one of my favorite stays in Japan and a great value for all they offer. Our room included a private onsen bath that was beautiful and so relaxing! Our beds were raised mattress western-style, but the room was very traditional Japanese with a tatami mat sitting room and shoji screens. The food was all delicious, more than enough to eat, and served to us in a private dining room. Service was phenomenal!! The location is near the snow monkey park, Shibu Onsen, and Obuse. This was a wonderful place to stay!

My wife & I stayed here in March ‘24 for its close proximity to the Monkey Park. From start to finish the stay was impeccable; with no request they were at Yudanaka station waiting for our arrival to drive us to the Ryokan - They also provide a free shuttle to go to the Monkey park in the morning after breakfast. Whilst rooms are small & basic, this is exactly what you are booking to experience as it’s traditional, the local town is cute to walk around and discover also. The meals, simply incredible - if you want to experience truly traditional Japanese dining at both breakfast and dinner, you need to do so in a place like this. Every single member of staff was attentive, polite and very welcoming The private onsen was a lovely experience also and most welcome after a cold trek to see the Snow Monkeys Would highly recommend anyone to stay here

Stayed here for 2 nights to visit the Snow Monkey park. Staff was amazing, courteous, and very helpful. It was a unique experience to stay in a traditional place, sleep on the floor, and try different foods. In addition to enjoying the public baths, we also opted to reserve the private bath each night, which was affordable and well worth it. Very convenient: The shuttle picked us up at the train station and dropped us off for our return to Nagano. The shuttle also took us to the Snow Monkey park. We opted to walk back from the park (all down hill and less than 2km) vs wait for the local bus. I would definitely recommend staying here.

We had the pleasure of staying in a comfortable double room at the Wafu-no-Yado MASUYA with a perfect location near the Snow Monkey Forest. The room itself was immaculate, and we had the option to use either a private bath or a public one. Personally, I found the public bath to be preferable. Additionally, the cuisine offered during our stay, including both breakfast and dinner, was outstanding.
Response from Property: Thank you for your staying at our ryokan Wafu no yado MASUYA. I'm glad that you enjoyed Onsen stay, kaiseki dinner. We are waiting for your visit again. Thank you. MASUYA staff Miyazaki

Me and my wife stayed only one night in this ryokan. The good thing about it is that it is located very close to the snow monkey park, just 5 minutes away. We had an amazing dinner experience, one of our best meals in Japan, tasty and with great variety. The hotel is very clean and has a nice public hot bath The only thing is that the rooms are not so big, but we managed ok

An exceptional experience of traditional a Japanese guesthouse. Etiquette was explained so there weren't any embarrassing missteps, decor was subtle, rooms were very comfortable (ours had private bathroom facilities - rare to find with this style of accommodation), exceptional attention by staff (right down to directing traffic for our parking and departure), delicious traditional Japanese breakfast (catered for coeliac diners easily), tasteful onsen in house. Quiet street, easy walking distance to many local restaurants; snow monkey park not far away (5-8mins by car); free outdoor parking next door. We rate this exceptionally high and would love to stay again.

After arriving Yudanaka station, hotel shuttle already there waiting for their guests. Shuttle driver was a young lady wearing kimono! Hotel is a very traditional Onsen. There are two natural hot springs one for ladies and one for men. Both have indoor and outdoor spa. Dinner was decent and tasty for an Onsen, We are so impressed by so many different collection of plates they used to serve customers. Service was excellent. Free shuttle was provided to the starting point to enter snow monkey park. From the back side of the Onsen, it is the starting point to walk into Onsen Street. We photographed all nine public baths on the street. It is a sign of good luck if you visit them all.

We chose this place to stay for two nights after our daughter made it clear we should be going to visit the monkeys at the Jigokudani Monkey Park, and we weren’t disappointed. The village itself might be a bit disappointing - don’t expect too much as it’s a little bit run down, with modern buildings, factories etc, and it’s only at the area containing the community hot springs that reflects ‘old’ Japan. Nevertheless, it’s a great base for the monkey park, and easily accessible by train or bus. They ryokan itself is also in a relatively modern 4 storey building, but in all other respects is a traditional inn. The rooms are comfortably furnished, with everything needed, although the bathroom was on the smaller side. The real pluses were the staff, the service and the food - all excellent. From being unexpectedly met at the station when we arrived (we told them we were arriving earlier than the 3.00 check in time) to when one of the staff found us on the platform when we were leaving to hand over a piece of jewellery my daughter had left in the room, the staff and their service were brilliant. We booked half board and the multiple course kaiseki dinners and breakfasts were a delight. I don’t think there are Western choices, but when in Japan… The public onsen at the ryokan are great, and we took a private one for an hour so we could soak together. If there were any downsides, even though it was mid January, the indoor temperatures seemed to be set at around 30 degrees - open windows were the relief. Lastly, it’s not cheap, but we thought it was value for money all things considered, and recommended.
