Outstanding
FFussy New YorkerI had a large tatami room with side sitting area and sink as well as an ante-room. I had three delicious Japanese meals at the ryokan that were served with polite elegance. The two in-house onsen baths were a joy to use after a day of skiing. The staff was knowledgeable about how to get around by the buses and suggested the best restaurants for days that I did not eat at the ryokan. Senshinkan Matsuya was situated in the center of.Shibu Onsen town next to three of the public onsen. I could not ask for a better stay!

GGuest UserAmazing family run ryokan just few minutes drive from Snow Monkey Park. Booked a room with a private in-room onsen but it didn't make much sense as the bath was hot but there was no hot water in the shower. The room was spacious with comfortable beds and futon. Nice yukatas and socks were provided in the room. Public baths in the ryokan are great (especially outdoor area), we tried both of them. The kaiseki dinner and japanese breakfast are VERY delicious. The staff and the owner are so nice and welcoming. The free transfer to the Monkey Park is available at 9:45 am

Amazing
GGuest UserThis is a traditional Japanese ryokan, and the room was very clean. They have separate private onsen baths for men and women on the top floor, as well as private family baths. The meals were abundant, and they even prepared our futons for us at night. The service was a major highlight: the elderly gentleman from the ryokan drove us to the station, and after we got on the bus, the lady from the ryokan kept waving goodbye and bowing. She continued to wave until the bus crossed to the other side of the river. I looked back, and she was still waving, then bowed again as the bus reached the other bank. I was truly amazed! Overall, I highly recommend this place.

DDunwoWow! An amazing little Ryoukan in a lovely town with fantastic owners. This ryoukan is a traditional old fashioned style with a lovely private onsen in pictures The room was large and your right on top of one of the 9 onsens. As a ryoukan in the town you will have access to the 9 healing onsens which you can use at your leisure and complete the denyouko towel for blessings The onsen is run by a lovely lady who is really friendly. Typical Amenities included plus free yukata and geta to borrow whilst your walking between hot springs plus free cold milk which is just heavenly after a hot soak. Honestly the cold milk really made my day!! 🥰 Air conditioning was very effective considering the size of the room and the breakfast was too much to finish and offered a taste of everything Lastly you are on top of the onsens as soon as you step out and monkey park is a 25 minute walk north but talk with the Owner, she has a link to the Monkey security cameras so can tell you ahead of time if theres any up there to see currently (i went during Estrus season so no monkeys for me) When it came to checkout the lady gave me a small bento of Onigiri and Pastries and even drove me down to the local station 10/10 would stay again

Great
CCubie LengThe hotel was great and exceeded our expectation in all ways. the parking was large and easy to access. The facilities were great especially the onsen on level 5, the view of teh onsen out to the mountains was fantastic. The reception and staff in the hotel were super courteous and smiley and friendly. The breakfast was beyond expectation , the hotel staff will meet you at the lobby and guide you to your seats/table where all the food has been prepared and laid out. the food was great and super filling, with appetizer, miso soup, side dishes, main, rice, fruits, green tea/coffee and also dessert in the form of yoghurt. Aside form that, for the Western breakfast, they set up a toastbox at the table for you to toast your basket of bread assortment. Other worthy aspect are the 8-10pm Sake hours, where you are given tokens to sample the range of sake and wine from their coin-operated dispenser, along with free snacks. When they make up the room daily, they will also leave sample of snacks on the table daily. Overall it was a great stay and i will definately recommend this hotel to others/my friends.

AAnonymous UserIt's a 10 mins walk uphill from train station so maybe better to try to contact them for a complimentary pick up. The place is super grand and 2 onsens. A Instagram worthy one that the males and females get to use it at different timings. The shower stuff in the onsen are mediocre though. No fancy facial stuff for women unlike some other onsens at this price range. We had breakfast and dinner for the 2 nights. And well worth it. But you have to follow a fixed timing and we felt a bit rushed but otherwise it was really great and service perfect. We had one the biggest rooms I believe Room 716. Had a sitting area and also a sleeping area. Easily fits 8 persons. We were only 2. In the day they kept the futons and brought it out at night. Towels changed every night. There is a van that goes straight to Mount Yokoteyama ski resort. The receptionist didn't seem to know about it but you could try to Google. It was a complimentary ride to and fro if you bought the lift tickets. Took only like 30 mins to get there. You can get rentals at hotels there.

GGuest UserAmazing Stay at Hotel Iwasuge – A Hidden Gem for Ski & Onsen Lovers! We had an incredible stay at Hotel Iwasuge, which truly became the highlight of our trip. While the interior may be a bit dated, the five-star service and exceptional food more than made up for it. We stayed for two nights on a half-board plan, and every meal was different, delicious, and thoughtfully prepared. The hospitality was outstanding—every staff member was incredibly helpful and made us feel right at home. The location is perfect for skiing, with ski-in, ski-out access. There are two lifts right next to the hotel—one going up and one going down. The slopes nearby offer a mix of red and green tracks, making them ideal for beginners and families. Our kids especially loved the wide, easy slopes. We also rented ski equipment directly from the hotel (though helmets were not included). After a long day on the slopes, the Hoppo Onsen was the perfect way to relax. The onsen itself is so good that we noticed some visitors coming just for the hot spring experience! We have stayed in many four- and five-star hotels, and Hotel Iwasuge is truly one of the best. It may not be as widely known, but it absolutely deserves more recognition. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic ski, onsen, and gourmet experience in Shiga Kogen. We can’t wait to return!

OO.K. MACSince it was cheaper than other ryokans in the area, I didn’t expect much. But to my surprise, it offered full service—just like the more expensive ryokans I’ve stayed at before! They even provided a pickup service from the train station, which I forgot to book. Luckily, a Western couple sitting next to me on the train had reserved it. When I saw the “Hotel Housei” sign on the van outside the station, I hopped in! The hotel is a bit far from the station and involves walking up and down hills, so carrying luggage all the way would have been quite tough. I was really fortunate to catch that ride! Cherry blossoms were in full bloom along the river, just a few steps from the hotel—such a beautiful sight. The room wasn’t large, but it had enough space and was very comfortable. The elderly gentleman at the front desk seemed to speak multiple languages—he even knew some Thai! He was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The onsen was wonderful. The indoor bath was a bit too hot for me, but the outdoor bath was cooler and more relaxing. Breakfast was a buffet, which was decent. In conclusion, this place was absolutely worth it. Next time, if I go skiing in Shiga Kogen or bring someone to see the snow monkeys, I’ll definitely remember to book the pick-up and drop-off service in advance!

MMapillowA beautiful over 100 years old ryokan, the staff / owners were as amazing and friendly, the charm and attention to detail is lovely throughout. Key to the public onsens was great, and full details are provided for relaxing use of them. Very accommodating for English speaking. Tatami beds were comfy, room large with views of street. Very helpful and appreciated shuttle to the snow monkeys. Well made and presented food for the morning. Very cozy, in a very cosy village, would love to come again 😎

GGuest UserThe reality exceeded my expectations; the hotel was even better than I imagined. The room was very comfortable for a family with a small child! There's a private hot spring for families available by reservation, though the usage time is a bit short, it's still great overall! The food is high-quality, delicious, and varied. It's also possible to extend your stay for 1000 yen per hour, which is super convenient when traveling with a child. The hotel corridors aren't perfectly clean due to age, but the room itself is clean and pleasant.
