The Egyptian economy is built almost entirely on tourism from the famous pyramids at Giza to the resorts on the Red Sea. But there’s one harder to get to location thats definitely worth the effort: Abu Simbel and with daily flights from Cairo with Egyptair it’s worth the effort. Although you can fly from Cairo there is a layover in Aswan and so I recommend spending a night or two there if have the time. Late Evening You land in Aswan International Airport and a porter asks what your luggage looks like before loading the heavy maletas onto a cart and escorting you out to the front. You wave past the soldier guarding the entrance and enter your taxi or pre-arranged ride. Make sure you tip your porter, 300 EGP would make him happy. The Hotel: Obelisk Nile Hotel Thirty five minutes later you arrive to the steps of your hotel on the Nile. After passing through a heavily guarded entrance you’re welcomed by white marble pathways straight from Stephen Sommer’s The Mummy (1999). Farid escorts you to the reception where the desk manager informs you of the hotel amenities. Noting your early your to Abu Simbel he arranges to have your included breakfast bagged. Walk along the path to your room along the Nile through meticulously manicured grounds, you’re delighted to be greeted by the coldest A/C in Egypt and chilled bottles of water in mini-fridge. And the bed is beyond comfortable. The Next Morning About 8 hours later and after a shower in the beautiful bathroom, you get a call to your room from the reception. It’s your tour guide 10 minutes before pickup letting you know he’s ready whenever you are. You pickup your bagged breakfast from the restaurant and your tour guide escorts you to his driver’s car: cold A/C and leather interior. You’re whisked away, safely from the searing Egyptian heat in your foreign manufactured and chilled cocoon. Your guide gives you a treat and lectures you on 5000 years of Egyptian history from the mummies to Sisi. You take a nap after a short night and he wakes you up for a quick stop at Sarah Coffee. After a drink and restroom break it’s another hour and a half through desolate wasteland. But it’s beautiful though deadly looking. The afternoon You arrive to the banks of Lake Nasser. There’s only a few cars as the tour busses are gone by 10am. You’re immediately hounded by the local merchants but your guide calmly waves them away. There’s the standard Egyptian souvenirs but all can be found in Cairo and better priced. Don’t forget your water bottle and umbrella, there’s no shade here and the temples are on a small but punishing hill. Your guide quickly reminds you of the highlights as he cannot enter the temple with you but makes an excellent photog and you get your payoff of you standing in front of the temple of Ramses. No spoilers here, the temples have to be experienced in person. But after an hour or more if you can manage the heat and hundreds of photos, your guide escorts you out and you arrive to a restaurant nearby: New Abu Simbel Restaurant. It’s so new, neither Google nor Instagram know about it but the food is amazing. I personally loved the Kofta but also tried the chicken which is good. The tour includes the food but not the drinks and though they do take card, bring some Egyptian pounds because the credit card reader is temperamental. After a satisfying lunch, it’s 3 hours back to the hotel with a restroom and drink break halfway. Your guide offers to take you to local highlights in Aswan like the spice museum but your flight is quickly arriving. The late evening traffic is intense so budgeting an hour of travel time is smart. After arriving to the hotel you have dinner at the Italian restaurant next door and enjoy the sun setting behind the western Desert. In a few hours you’re on the plane back to Cairo. 💰Average Price per Person: flights to Abu Simbel are very expensive: $250 USD each way for an hour flight. This spectacle not only demonstrates the ancient Egyptians' precise observation of the cosmic order but also highlights their reverence and worship of the sun god. In 1964, due to the construction of the Aswan Reservoir, the Abu Simbel Temple needed to be relocated 60 meters higher. Let us explore the cultural treasures of Egypt together! 🇪🇬☀️ 🕗 7am - Temple of Philae Early in the morning, we arrived at the beautiful Nile River in Aswan to visit the Temple of Philae. This temple is regarded as a symbol of love and beauty. It was once faced with flooding due to the construction of the Aswan Reservoir and was later moved to Ajikya Island. This ancient temple is famous for its colorful reliefs and stone columns and is a treasure of Egyptian mythology and religion. We also felt how much Egyptians like taking photos with Asians. Every day when we went to the temple, we were constantly asked to take photos, and when we walked on the street. I even wondered if the Egyptians made bets with their friends on how many Asians they could take photos with every day! 🚗 09:00 - Head to Abu Simbel Next, we set off on our journey to the world-famous Abu Simbel. This magical place was built by the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II in memory of himself and his queen. The most unique thing about the Abu Simbel temples is that in order to avoid being flooded by the reservoir, the entire temple was disassembled, moved to higher ground, and reassembled. After a 3.5-hour drive, we arrived at Abu Simbel Temple at 1pm. There were no group tourists when we arrived, and they were all individual tourists who chartered their own cars, so it was easy to take pictures of the empty scenery. We took a leisurely walk to the Abu Simbel Temples. When we arrived, the owner's wife prepared a welcome drink, Roselle tea, for me to drink. When I entered the room, I smelled a fragrant scent and felt that the room was very clean. The whole space was very warm! Accommodation near Abu Simbel Temple is very expensive. Ordinary hotels cost about 3,600 to 5,000. If you want one that costs about 2,000, it is quite far from the temple and takes more than 30 minutes to walk. The B&B I booked is about 2,900$95 USD, about 15 minutes to walk from the temple. Although the toilet is not in the room, each room has its own bathroom. There is also a kitchen in the B&B, and the refrigerator is filled with fruits, drinks and water. Because when we went there about half of the people were Chinese, so the film that day was dubbed in Chinese! However, the standard dubbing by Chinese voice actors gave the whole film a very strange atmosphere.
