2026 Almaty Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

🗻 I'll share my experience visiting the Shymbulak resort in the summer, riding the cable car in a separate glass-floored cabin. ⚠️ Important information: From July 24, 2026, to November 30, 2026, the Medeu-Tuyuk-Su road is closed for infrastructure upgrades. Therefore, you can get from the Medeu station to Shymbulak in the following ways: · Hiking; · Cable car; · Gondola. So, we chose the cable car. 📍 How to get to the resort: It's about 25-30 km from the center of Almaty to the Medeu station: · By bus; · By taxi; · By private transport. After arriving at the Medeu station, you must purchase lift tickets at the resort ticket office. Three lifts take you to the top. 💰 I'll tell you about the basic roundtrip fares: · For adults 15 years and older; · For children 6 to 14 years old. ⬇️ Here they are ⬇️ 1️⃣ Roundtrip fare — 12,000 KZT (~$25) for adults / 4,000 KZT (~$8.50) for children. Important: each gondola is limited to 8 people! If you'd like to purchase a gondola ride just for yourself, there are the following rates: 2️⃣ Individual fare (up to 2 people) — 60,000 KZT (~$128). But I'd like to tell you about the rate we were especially pleased with, and the one we took. 🔥3️⃣🔥 This is the 360° fare—a ride in a gondola with a transparent floor. These are special blue gondolas with the Samsung logo. This fare also has two options: Individual (up to 2 people) — 70,000 KZT (~$149); Regular 360° — 14,000 KZT (~$30). The difference in price between a regular ride and a 360° ride is only 2,000 KZT (~$4), but it offers several advantages, in my opinion: Great views thanks to the glass floor; The low popularity of this fare increases your chances of getting a ride in the gondola alone! Just like what happened to us—round trip 🚡 After standing in line for the lifts (7-10 minutes) and approaching the gondolas, we informed the resort staff that we had the 360° rate. We were then placed in a separate line, and when the blue gondola arrived, we were the only ones in it 😊 🚡 We then enjoyed the comfortable ride and the fabulous views 🏞️ (photo attached). The ride in this gondola is about 15 minutes. We also rode alone on the return trip, with a huge line for the gondolas. ! It's important to know that when transferring to higher lifts, only regular gondolas operate according to the general rules—up to 8 people. I can't say for sure whether we were lucky that day or if this rate is truly unpopular, but the fact that we had a wonderful ride in a private cabin with a transparent floor was definitely worth it 💖 P.S. Of course, the method of ascent to Shymbulak isn't the most important thing. The most beautiful and impressive thing is the local nature, the majesty of the mountains, and the surrounding landscapes. I'll share more about the interesting places and impressions in a separate post.

Kazakhstan wasn't originally high on my travel list, but after visiting, I honestly wondered why more people don't talk about it. I also spent time at Kolsai Lake, where the crystal clear water reflected the surrounding pine forests. It was the kind of place where I could have stayed for hours without checking my phone. Before leaving, I rode the cable car to Kok Tobe, watching the city slowly light up as the sun disappeared behind the mountains. What impressed me most about Kazakhstan wasn't just its scenery it was how untouched and uncrowded everything felt. Day One: Parks, Cathedrals, and Panoramic Views from Kok-Tobe Start your journey in the very heart of Almaty: Panfilov Park. It's a green oasis in the city center filled with century-old trees and shady alleys. Here lies the city's main architectural gem—the Ascension Cathedral (Zenkov Cathedral). It’s the second-tallest wooden church in the world, built in the early 20th century without a single nail. Its green, yellow, and pastel-hued facade gently stands out against the cityscape, while inside you'll find a carved iconostasis and antique frescoes. Admission is free. Right in the park is the Memorial of Glory to the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. It features an eternal flame, massive granite slabs, and solemn silence. Nearby is the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments, housed in a building that looks like a fairytale wooden tower. Inside is a unique collection of traditional Kazakh musical instruments, some of which are still played today. Next, take a stroll from the Abay Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater down Panfilov Street—one of the city's oldest pedestrian avenues. Along the way, you can check out: The park at Astana Square — a beautifully manicured public square with fountains. · Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU) — a modern building featuring fascinating architecture. · Northern Square — a quiet spot perfect for a short breather. · The National Bank of Kazakhstan building — a monumental structure right in the downtown area. In the evening, hit the absolute must-do route: Kok-Tobe Hill. Ride up on the 1,620-meter-long cable car. The trip takes about 7 minutes, offering incredible views of the city and snowy peaks. At the top, you'll find an observation deck, a Ferris wheel, a panoramic restaurant, and even a monument to The Beatles. The best time to visit is right around sunset. Cable car tickets: 6,000 tenge one-way, 10,000 tenge round-trip. Day Two: Mountains, Sports, and the Botanical Garden Dedicate your second day to mountains and nature. In the morning, head to Medeu—the highest alpine skating rink in the world, located at an altitude of 1,691 meters. Heads up: the rink is currently closed for a massive renovation. The work is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2027. So, for now, you won't be able to get on the ice—you can only check out the construction site from the outside. However, the cable car to Shymbulak is up and running. From Medeu, you can take the gondola straight to the ski resort. The lift goes all the way up to the Combi-2 station at an elevation of 3,200 meters. The ticket costs 12,000 tenge. At the top, you'll find observation decks, restaurants, and sweeping panoramas of the entire valley. If you still have time and energy left: · First President's Park — a beautiful, modern park with wide alleys and gorgeous mountain views. Admission is free. · Botanical Garden — a massive park featuring rare plants from all over the world. Entrance is around 500–1,000 tenge. · Almatinka District — an old residential area with distinctive architecture and local flavor. Where to Eat and Grab Coffee ☕️ Almaty has an excellent local coffee chain called Vanila. They brew great coffee, bake delicious pastries, and offer a super cozy vibe. There are several spots scattered around the center, making it really convenient to find one. If you want to see as many mountain landscapes as possible in a single day, the Malaya Krugosvetka (Little Circular Route) is an excellent choice. The trail hits several iconic peaks of the Trans-Ili Alatau: Furmanov Peak (≈3,053 m), Panorama Peak (≈3,260 m), Bashuta Peak (≈3,360 m), and Chimbulachka Peak (≈3,450 m). For almost the entire hike, you'll be treated to stunning views of glaciers, snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and the city of Almaty itself. I decided to get a head start and took a taxi to Medeu at 5:30 AM. The ride cost 4,200 tenge. Starting that early was definitely the right move: it was cool, there was hardly anyone around, and the morning light made the views exceptionally beautiful. 🏔️ Furmanov Peak is the first major summit on the trail. The climb is considered easy to easy-moderate, making it one of the most popular spots for beginners looking to experience high-altitude hiking. Even from here, you get impressive views of the Little Almaty Gorge valley and the surrounding ridges. 📸 Panorama Peak completely lives up to its name. This is where most people take their most striking photos, as it offers a 360-degree view of almost the entire Trans-Ili Alatau. The ascent gets steeper here, but technically, the trail remains straightforward. ⛰️ Bashuta Peak adds a more athletic vibe to the hike. The trail runs along an exposed ridge where you can almost always feel the wind. It offers great views of the glaciers in the Talgar massif and countless unnamed peaks of the Northern Tien Shan. ❄️ Chimbulachka Peak is the highest point of the Malaya Krugosvetka. At around 3,450 meters, you really start to feel the altitude, and snow often lingers here into early summer. This spot provides the most sweeping views of the glaciers, the Shymbulak ski resort, and the surrounding peaks. For most hikers, this is the most unforgettable part of the trek. 💪 In terms of difficulty, the trail is considered moderate. It doesn't require any technical mountaineering gear, but you'll need to cover about 18–20 km, gain roughly 1,400–1,700 meters in elevation (depending on the exact route), and spend 9–11 hours on the move. Good physical fitness, plenty of water, and sun protection are absolutely essential here. After descending to the Combi-2 station around 5:00 PM, I took the cable car down to Shymbulak for free. From there, I caught an eco-taxi to Medeu for 4,000 tenge, and then a regular taxi back home for 4,500 tenge. What stood out to me the most was how much the scenery changed in just one day: dense spruce forests, blooming alpine meadows, rocky ridges, snowfields, and glaciers. This is exactly why I love the mountains in Almaty—you can feel worlds away from the big city, even though downtown is only about an hour away. ⭐ If you want to see some of the most stunning panoramas of the Trans-Ili Alatau without any mountaineering experience, the Malaya Krugosvetka is one of the best one-day hikes you can do.

🇰🇿 Kazakhstan 7 Days 6 Nights 🏔️🐎 If you want a change of scenery from big cities, give Kazakhstan a chance. As the largest country in Central Asia, you'll discover a land full of snow-capped mountains, uniquely blue lakes, magnificent canyons, and cities that fascinatingly blend modernity with nomadic culture.
